The Leader in Me

Dear Parents and Caregivers,

Our class will use The Leader in Me program as an introduction to personal leadership. All students have the capacity to lead in their own lives and affect those around them by making positive choices. The Leader in Me provides students with activities that will help them learn practical character and life skills that will lead to those positive choices. Written to appeal to their age level, students are presented with fun activities designed to get them thinking. Your child is about to embark on an exciting journey and our hope is that you will ask your child how he/she is doing along the way. The “Parent’s Place” is available at www.theleaderinme.org/parents/. Here you will find ideas to use at home to reinforce your child’s learning and involve the family in a fun, interactive way.

Habit 1 - Be Proactive

I am responsible for my words when I talk to my friends. I am responsible for my school work and staying on task. I am in charge of keeping my desk organized and cleaning up after I am done. I am helpful and I follow all rules at all times. I am in charge of my hands and feet and am careful of others. I am respectful of others learning around me. I give my friends think time and wait my turn to speak. I choose to be happy and nice to others.

Habit 2 - Begin With The End In Mind

I have a plan and stay on task. I read books and take AR tests. I practice my new words so I can get them correct on the test day. I put my papers in my folder so I know where they are when I need them. I want to improve my reading, writing, and math skills so I practice and do my best everyday. I write neatly so someone else can read it.

Habit 3 - Put First Things First

I get all my work done before I play at recess. I put my name on my paper. I keep my desk organized and not a mess. I eat my food then play at recess. I go to the bathroom and wash my hands at recess. I push in my chair before I walk away.

Habit 4 - Think Win Win

I think about others and not just myself. I take turns with my toys. I help clean up the classroom. I think about other people and how they feel. I let other people go first. I help the teacher keep the whole class learning.

Habit 5 - Seek First To Understand, Then Be Understood

I listen to other people’s ideas and feelings. I try to see things from their viewpoint (paradigm). I listen to others without interrupting. I listen with my ears, my eyes, and my heart. I am confident in voicing my ideas.

Habit 6 - Synergize, Together is Better!

I value other people’s strengths and learn from them. I get along well with others, even people who are different than me. I work well in groups. I seek out other people’s ideas because I know that by teaming with others, we can create better solutions than what any one of us could alone. I look for Third alternatives.

Habit 7 - Sharpen The Saw, Balance Feels Best

I eat right, exercise, and get enough sleep (body). I learn in lots of ways and lots of places, not just at school (brain). I spend time with family and friends (heart). I take time to find meaningful ways to help people (soul). I balance all four parts of myself.
