WHAT IS SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT?
Social-emotional development includes the student's experience, expression, and management of emotions and the ability to establish positive and rewarding relationships with others.
HOW CARRILLO PROMOTES SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING
At Carrillo we are committed to supporting the growth of the whole child, and a part of that is helping students develop important social-emotional skills through the Second Step program.
Second Step lessons are taught by the teacher in every classroom to guarantee that all students acquire a common foundation of social-emotional skills and strategies. This consistent approach makes it easier for students to practice, use, and have these skills reinforced across the school community and with their families at home.
Students at Carrillo will learn strategies for showing empathy, managing emotions, making responsible decisions, and solving problems in positive ways through the four units in the Second Step curriculum: Growth Mindset & Goal-Setting, Emotion Management, Empathy & Kindness, and Problem-Solving.
HOW DO STUDENTS AND SCHOOLS BENEFIT?
Studies show that these skills can support students’ school performance, increase positive social behaviors, and reduce conduct problems such as bullying. Programs that teach these skills can also help create positive classroom and school climates.
