MISSION
Every student will develop skills for academic success, an understanding of career opportunities, social/emotional skills, and be equipped with essential tools for navigating academic challenges and the complexities of social interactions and emotional wellbeing.
My mission aligns perfectly with Carrillo's vision of offering students a well-rounded education that encompasses not only rigorous academics but also character education with access to various enriching disciplines like STEM, Drama, Music, and Art.
This comprehensive, holistic approach ensures that students are not only academically proficient but also socially and emotionally competent, setting them up for success in all aspects of their lives.
VISION
Every SMUSD student graduates with the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to be successful in a wide variety of career pathways. All students actively and innovatively seek challenging and meaningful experiences and are poised to excel as productive members of a diverse global community.
When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.

MEET YOUR SCHOOL COUNSELOR
It is a pleasure to meet you. My name is Joanna Herrera and students refer to me as Mrs. Herrera. I believe that every student has the potential to be successful and I am committed to support all students from a whole child perspective throughout their journey here at Carrillo.
I love that as a School Counselor I get to find pathways for student success and help hearts and minds. I believe that when we help the whole child, that is when we will truly see them at their best.

ROLES OF A SCHOOL COUNSELOR
Help students reach their full potential by exploring the abilities of the students, their strengths, and their interests as these traits relate to career awareness and development.
Develop a comprehensive, holistic school counseling program (that identifies student needs, intervention plans, and implementation of supports) as an integral part of the educational process that promotes and enables all students to achieve success in school.
Identify and utilize community resources that can enhance and complement the comprehensive, holistic counseling program and help students become productive members of society and achieve success in school.
Utilize a multi-tiered multi-domain systems of support (MTMDSS) model to review data and collaborate with staff and families to identify, facilitate, and/or refer students to appropriate interventions and services, and to assess and address barriers to learning.
Provide support / intervention to at-risk students who are declining in academics, attendance, and/or social-emotional learning using data to increase academic achievement.
WHY COUNSELING SERVICES ARE IMPORTANT IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept, feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family.
The elementary school years set the foundation for developing the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary for children to become healthy, competent and confident learners.
These years are crucial developmental years. Our students benefit from access to a counselor to support them academically, socially, and emotionally as they prepare for the everchanging world of the 21st century and move on to middle school and beyond.
By providing education, prevention, early identification and intervention, elementary school counselors help their students achieve academic success, develop an understanding of career opportunities and develop social/emotional skills in response to issues they face.
