Theatre Classes

Introduction to Theatre (Drama)

This is the introductory course to theatre at East. Though most students take this class as a freshman, Intro can be taken any year and even more than once. Be prepared for original works, duets, theatre history, tons of improvisation, and to make friends and memories that will last. Drama will cover all of the theatre basics, including a first look at both the acting and technical aspects of theatre. You will get to explore the theatre spaces, become familiar with the different crews, and experiment with producing your own short scenes. Drama is filled with fun projects and bonding experiences. This class will truly make you fall in love with theatre.

Technical Theatre

This class is a semester long deep dive into all the technical aspects of theatre. You will learn about every crew, tool, and backstage procedure necessary to putting on a production. Tech theatre gives students a chance to experiment with participating in every different crew. You will learn safety and how to use everything from the sound system to the saws. This class is typically taken by sophomores after Drama, but anyone can take this class.

Actors' Studio

Actors' Studio puts a heavy emphasis on the writing and acting side of theatre. With this class, you will have the opportunity to write and perform your own monologues. Actors' Studio will truly hone your acting skills and bring out your voice as a writer. You will get valuable audition experience and useful feedback from your teacher and peers. Actors' Studio will help you become more comfortable on stage and acting in front of an audience. This class is also typically taken by sophomores after Drama (in the same year as Tech Theatre), but any student can enroll in Actors' Studio.

Repertory Theatre

Repertory Theatre is the class where you get to put it all together. In Rep, you will put on two shows, one first semester and one second semester. The first show you will do is your Children’s Show. Every student gets the opportunity to choose their favorite children’s book and make it into a short 5 minute live production. You will do all the directing, casting, technical work, preparation, props, and costumes for your own show. You will have the opportunity to act in and do tech for your classmates’ shows as well! The second show you will do is Repertory Theatre Original One-Acts. Rep Shows are similar to Children’s Shows, except instead of choosing a book for your script, everyone gets to write their own one act. It’s an amazing opportunity and a great experience to prepare you for Advanced Repertory Theatre. This class is typically taken by juniors and requires all three previous theatre classes as prerequisites.

Advanced Repertory Theatre

Advanced Repertory Theatre is the senior level theatre class. Every previous theatre class is required to take Advanced Rep. It is truly the culmination of three years of theatre experience and instruction. Every Advanced Rep student gets the opportunity to produce, stage, and direct their own one-act called a Frequent Friday. Frequent Fridays are typically around 30 minutes or less and are how underclassmen usually get their start in theatre. You will get about a month to cast, direct, and produce your Frequent Friday before it is performed on the Little Theatre stage. You have the choice of selecting a script or writing your own. Don’t be afraid to start planning early! Some students choose to start writing or searching for a script as early as freshman year.
