Grade 7 Social Studies

Homework  will be assigned as needed. Quiz and test dates will be posted here. Please check back during the week to see if any changes have been made. 

Week of August 28th -  There is no textbook for this class. Everything will be planned and given to you through Google Classroom or class. This week we will review geography and discuss types of maps. There will be a map activity for homework and it is due on Tuesday, September 5. 

Week of September 5th - We will continue with our geography lessons by talking about map elements (parts of a map) and latitude and longitude. Homework this week is to create a political map of North America (there is a worksheet template). It is due on Monday, September 11th.

Thursday, September 7th update - You will have your first quiz on Tuesday, September 12th. It will be a short, multiple choice quiz on Google Forms. The vocabulary words from your notes including geography, types of maps and parts of a map, prime meridian and equator will be included on the quiz. Please begin to study soon!

Week of September 11th - we will continue working on parts of the map. Homework is reading about and using a climate map for the continent of Europe. The readings can be found on Google Classroom. The questions will be passed out in class. This assignment is due Friday, September 15th.

Week of September 18th - we continue learning about geography and physical features this week. There will be NO homework due to standardized testing :)

Week of September 25 - Homework is a review on using scale and grids. It will be graded and is due on Friday, September 29th. There will be an open note quiz on physical features on Wednesday, September 27th. Also, please take a look around your house or consider saving for a shoe box or a small pizza box lid for an in-school project coming up - please do not bring them in yet! Thank you :)

Week of October 2 - A reading and questions will be posted about Christopher Columbus. Also, you will be researching a particular type of geographic tool that Columbus used and compare it to modern day technology. Please make sure to complete all activities associated as it will be discussed in class and graded. It is due Monday, October 9th.

Week of October 9 - As work continues on our Physical Geography projects, students are asked to start the next topic in this unit about the five themes of geography. "The Five Themes of Geography" reading and questions are due on Friday, October 13th - please make sure to read and complete this assignment as it will be used in class to begin this part of the unit.

~ As of right now, the final Geography test will be on Friday, October 27th. A list of topics and concepts will be posted soon. 

Week of October 16th - Students are working on the Five Themes of Geography. For HW this week, they will choose a country and complete a graphic organizer with information regarding the themes about the chosen country. A worksheet will guide them. 

Test for Geography will be on Friday, October 27th - a list of topics and concepts will be posted this coming week.


Week of October 23 - Test this week October 27th - please study - no additional homework will be given.

Week of October 30th - Test will be Monday, October 30th - no additional homework will be given this week.

Week of November 6 - we have started our Culture Unit and homework will be to create a slide presentation about YOUR culture. Please see the information posted on Google Classroom. Directions will be given in class. The due date for this assignment is Wednesday, November 15th.

Week of November 13th - no additional homework this week, please finish your slide presentations. Looking Ahead - Unit 2 - Culture quiz on Friday, December 8th.

Week of November 27th - readings on culture - all readings will be posted on Google Classroom - all work (a one page paper) is due on Friday,  December 8th. This will be a graded assignment.

Week of December 4th - writing assignment about culture is due this Friday, December 8th. A test will be given on culture on Wednesday, December 13th. This will be a multiple choice test with two short answer questions. See below for a list of vocabulary and the three short answer questions in order to prepare and study:

Week of January 3 - there is no written homework for the next two weeks so students can study the Geography and Culture notes and vocabulary for the mid-term. It is a multiple choice test. 

Week of January 8th - there is no written homework for the next two weeks so students can study the Geography and Culture notes and vocabulary for the mid-term. It is a multiple choice test. A list of terms will be posted early this week. Please check the Google Classroom.

Information that was posted on Google Classroom for the mid-term/topics you need to know:

- Five Themes of Geography (Location, Place, Movement, Region, Human/Environment Interaction)

- Parts of a Map (title, compass rose, cardinal directions, intermediate directions, symbols, map key, scale, difference between linear and word scale and coordinate grid)

- Types of maps (political and physical - definition)

- latitude and longitude (definitions)

- adapt/modify (definitions and basic examples)

- maps and globes (definitions and basic differences between them)

- physical features (definition) and archipelago, bay, prairies, cape, gulf, peninsula)

- definitions for culture, cultural characteristics, cultural convergence and cultural divergence, cultural diffusion, assimilation, cultural diversity, traditions and customs

- The Silk Road and The Crusades were examples of cultural diffusion


Week of January 16 - Social Studies mid-term is scheduled for Wednesday, January 17th. Please use the above information (also found on Google Classroom) to study. Good luck on all of your mid-terms this week!


Week of January 22 - midterm test will be uploaded to Google Classroom on the morning of Tuesday, January 23rd. It is due no later than 3pm on Thursday, January 25th. It is based on the "honor system" :)


Week of January 29 - Happy Catholic Schools Week! The students will continue with political systems this week and will get a double sided worksheet on important political documents/statements to complete by Friday, February 9th. It will used for discussion in class as well as a graded assignment.


Week of February 5 - the double sided worksheet on political documents is due this Friday, February 9th (it is graded) please do your best!


Week of February 12 - you will be researching important United States documents to allowed freedom and liberties. All information will be on Google Classroom. Use the links on Google to help you define each document and its importance first. This assignment is due on Friday, February 23rd.


Week of February 26 - homework due "Forms of Government" on Monday, March 4th.


Week of March 4 - Forms of Government due and tentative test day on Political Systems on Friday, March 22nd (this will be updated and finalized by the end of the week). A list of topics and content will be posted here and on Google Classroom.


Week of March 11 - we will have a Social Studies test on political systems on Wednesday, March 27th. It will be multiple choice AND short answer.

The topics you will need to review are:

- different types of government (democratic republic, dictatorship, theocracy, monarchy)

- The Magna Carta

- The US Constitution

- The Declaration of Independence

- The Russian Revolution

- The "isms" (nationalism, militarism, imperialism)

- Be able to explain a political cartoon and read a map for information

- Propaganda (we will complete this topic next week - 3/18)

Week of March 18th - Social Studies test on Wednesday, March 27th. Please see above for topics/content to study. Please ask questions this week - don't wait!


Week of March 25th - make sure to study for the Political Systems test on Wednesday, March 27th! 


Week of April 15th - we are currently reading the novel "Words on Fire" in class. I will post the link to read-alouds so students can read at home. We will begin a written essay on this novel by Thursday with a final due date of Wednesday, April 24th . 


Week of April 22nd - no homework due to testing and Fun Run!


Week of April 29th - students will begin the Economics unit this week. The homework is a worksheet (reading and questions) on Adam Smith. This activity will be graded and is due on Monday, May 6th. All answers should be in complete sentences and please re-state the question if necessary to answer the questions.


Week of May 6th - Adam Smith homework due today. No written homework; final test will be on Thursday, May 30th and a list of topics was posted on Friday, May 3rd. Please begin to study.


Week of May 13th - continue to look over notes and prepare for the final test of the year. Also, finish the capitalism and communism illustrations tonight - due tomorrow (Tuesday, May 14th)

Week of May 20th  - continue to look over notes and prepare for the final test of the year. Homework will be assigned as needed to complete class activities.
