Grade 6 Social Studies


Homework  will be assigned as needed. Quiz and test dates will be posted here. Please check back during the week to see if any changes have been made. 

Week of August 28 - this week we will be working on basic skills needed for Social Studies including map skills. Please complete the world map according to the directions given in class. You will need to label all 7 continents and the 4 major oceans. Color each continent a different color and all of the water blue. Please color lightly so you can read the labels. Please bring the finished map back to school by Friday, September 1st. 

Week of September 5th - So far we have talked about basic "social studies" vocabulary and we are just about ready to dive into Prehistory curriculum. Homework this week is about a place called Skara Brae which is a great example of prehistorical human culture. It is a reading (which can be found on the Google Classroom Tuesday, September 5th) and a worksheet. The worksheet is due Monday, September 11th and will be used as a grade - do your best!

Thursday, September 7th update - You will have your first quiz on Tuesday, September 12th. It will be a short, multiple choice quiz on Google Forms. The vocabulary words - archaeologist, artifact, history, prehistory, primary and secondary source, paleolithic and neolithic will be on it as well as identifying examples of a primary and secondary source.  

Week of September 11th - we will finish with early humans this week and move onto civilizations! Our homework is a review of the paleolithic era and it is due on Friday, September 15th.

Week of September 18th - we will begin our first civilization this week. There will be NO homework this week due to standardized testing.:)

Week of September 25th - Homework this week will be using a primary source document to learn about our first civilization - Mesopotamia. Please read through the document carefully and make sure all sentences are complete and grammatically correct. The assignment will be graded and is due on Monday, October 2nd. The work will be posted on Google Classroom. 

There will also be a short quiz (multiple choice) to review some of our previous concepts - Paleolithic and Neolithic, the basic definition of civilization and the five (5) characteristics of a civilization. Please review your notes. The quiz will be on Wednesday, September 27th.

Week of October 2 - a fill in the blank worksheet called "Mesopotamia and the First Cities" will be given and due on Thursday, October 5th.

Week of October 9 - Great Cities of Mesopotamia reading (will be posted on Google Classroom) and questions (will be handed out in class) - read the information and complete the worksheet. This is due on Monday, October 16th. 

As of right now, the final Mesopotamia test will be on Tuesday, Ocotber 17th. A list of topics and concepts will be posted tomorrow afternoon to Google Classroom. 

Week of October 16th - All students should be studying their notes this week for the test - **UPDATE** the test will be pushed to Thursday, October 19th in order to complete a review and an extra day to study. Please refer to the list of topics and notes on Google Classroom.

Week of October 23rd - We finished with Mesopotamia this week and we are ready for our next civilization - Ancient Egypt!  A reading about Ancient Egypt will be posted on Monday afternoon, students will complete a worksheet throughout the week and it is due on Friday, October 27th. 

Week of October 30th - Students will be working on a reading called "Life in Ancient Egypt" and questions. This activity is due on November 3rd. Students will be asked to complete a set of questions while the reading will be posted to Google Classroom.

Week of November 6 - we are still working on the characteristics of Ancient Egypt. For homework this week, you will have a worksheet called "Cleopatra" since we will be talking about government this week. The homework is due on Monday, November 13th.

***Ancient Egypt final test on Friday, November 17th. Please begin to study your notes on Egyptian geography, characteristics of a civilization worksheet - be prepared to identify Nile River, Upper and Lower Egypt, mummification, papyrus, afterlife and pyramids. I will post this information and more on Google Classroom in the next few days.

Week of November 13 - Ancient Egypt test on Friday, November 17th. Please look over topics that were posted on Google Classroom. Re-read any information that was given at the beginning of the unit.

Week of November 27th - worksheet on India due on Friday, December 15th.

Week of December 4th - worksheet on India is a "work in progress". Please continue to work on it throughout the week as we continue through more of the unit. This is due on Friday, December 15th.

Week of December 11th - worksheet due on Friday and Ancient India quiz on Friday. Please check Google Classroom on Monday for a list of topics to review.

Ancient India quiz on Friday, December 15 (it could possibly change to Monday but be prepared for Friday).

It will be 20 multiple choice test on Google Forms.

List of topics:

~ Geography - know that India is a peninsula, the Indus River, the Himalayas and the three seas that surround India (check the map you made)

~ Harappa and Mohenjo-Daro were the first Indian cities and Harappa is known for indoor plumbing and the Aryans came and took over the Indus Valley.

~ Hinduism - yoga and meditation are practices used, caste system

~ Buddhism - know Siddharta Gautama, dharma, reincarnation, karma, Four Noble Truths, Eightfold Path, nirvana, the term Buddha means "enlightened one", Asoka (the Buddhist king)

~ The Golden Age of India started during the Gupta dynasty and we use Hindu-Arabic numerals (will be addressed by Tuesday, 12/12)  

Week of December 18th - no homework Merry Christmas!

Week of January 3 - Happy New Year! There is no homework this week because it is a short week. There is NO MID TERM for Grade 6 in Social Studies. 

Week of January 8 - This past week we started Ancient China. The students will have a double sided worksheet this week for homework. It is a fill in the blank with word banks based on Ancient Chinese leaders and dynasties. It is due Friday, January 12th. 

Week of January 16 - Students will complete a fill in the blanks activity on the Han Dynasty due on Friday, January 19th.

Week of January 22 - Since students were not able to get or complete the homework from last week, it will be given in class at some point. No other homework will be given due to MAP testing.

 Week of January 29 - Happy Catholic Schools Week! The students will be reviewing the four civilizations we have looked at this year. At home, the students will be working on a Google Form multiple choice activity (notes can be used) that reviews those civilizations. It will be posted on Google Classroom at 3PM. It is due on Monday, February 5th.

Week of February 5 - We will be starting a new unit this week on Ancient Greece. A homework will post about the Minoans and Mycenaean civilization which preceded the Greeks as we know them. It is due next Friday, February 16th and will be graded. Students will receive a paper copy and should turn in the paper copy next Friday.

Week of February 12th - continue to work on the Minoan and Mycenaean assignment. It is due on Friday, February 16th.

Week of February 26 - make sure to keep your Athens/Sparta worksheet for class this week. Google slides activity and questions on the Persian War - First Persian Invasion - You Decide (will be posted on the Google Classroom on Monday at 3:00pm). The ten questions on the last slide should be answered on loose leaf and turned in as a graded assignment on March 8th.

Week of March 4 - Persian War questions due Friday, March 8th. Students will finish with Alexander the Great this week and when they return will finish with Ancient Greece before Easter Break. A test is tentatively planned for Tuesday, March 26th on Ancient Greece. A list of topics and content will be posted here as well as Google Classroom within the week. 

Week of March 11 - North Bay Week!

Week of March 18th - There will be a final test for Ancient Greece on Wednesday, March 27th. Topics will be posted on Monday, March 18th on both this site (teacher web page) and Google Classroom. It will be all multiple choice. Begin looking over your notes this week and ask questions early - don't wait!

Make sure to study these topics and words:

- The battles of the Persian War and who were the Ionians?

- What is the Peloponnesian War?

- Definition of a peninsula

- Who is Alexander the Great?

- The four types of Greek government and the definition of city-state

- The major differences between Sparta (who is a 'helot') and Athens

- Greek legacy including: The Olympics, philosophy, types of architecture (columns) geometry, fables and the types of Greek drama (including the Iliad and the Odyssey (who wrote them) - these topics will be addressed throughout this week

Week of March 25th - make sure to study for the upcoming Ancient Greece test on Wednesday, March 27th. **** 6O (Olsen) your test will be Tuesday, March 26th due to the Passion Play performance on Wednesday, March 27th during your class period.


Week of April 15th - A video will be posted for students to watch about the Roman Republic government and check and balances. A worksheet will go home and will need to be completed for a collected and graded assignment. It is due on Friday, April 19th. It will be reviewed in class and then collected. 


Week of April 22nd - No homework due to testing and Fun Run!


Week of April 29th - students will be working on a "take home test" based on the Roman Republic. Students are permitted to use their resources (ex. copybook or Google Classroom). Answers should not be "googled" because all information is available. This activity will be graded and is due on Friday, May 2nd.


Week of May 6th - there will be no written homework - the final test for Social Studies will be on Thursday, May 30th - the topics are listed in the document below. Please begin to study and create study resources such as a Blooket or flash cards. This list is posted on Google Classroom as well.
