Guided Reading is one type of small group instruction that invites students to read books at their instructional level. Lessons take between 15-20 minutes and include significant scaffolding for readers as they are reading books above their independent reading level. Students then read quietly or silently while the teacher listens in to gather information about their strengthens and challenges. Following the reading, students engage in a quick comprehension conversation. The teacher then provides a quick teaching point based on observations and allows students to practice the strategy. The lesson concludes with word work often connected to the text.
Guided Reading lessons are especially useful for students who have been at a particular level for a while and need support to move to the next level, as well as Kindergarten and 1st grade students.
