If your student has demonstrated proficiency in reading beyond the grade level band on an F&P (i.e. level N for 2nd grade or V for 5th grade), then use this assessment to dig deeper to help identify 1.) if the student can do this work across a longer text, 2.) where the student needs support in this level (i.e. plot and setting, character, vocabulary and figurative language, theme and big ideas) and 3.) which strategies would best support this student in the identified areas of need.
To assess students, tell them that you want to get to know them as readers even more and one great way to do that is to see what they write about real books. Tell students that they can choose one of two books and that while they read, they will encounter small stickers that say "prompt 1, prompt 2." When they find those prompts, they will pause for a moment and answer that prompt with as much detail as possible on a Response Form. While they read, they will also fill out a Reading Log to keep track of how long it takes to read the book.
Once students have completed taking the assessment, use these Planning Forms to plan for instruction. The forms will help you identify if this is the appropriate level for your student and which areas of instruction would help push them as readers (plot and setting, character, vocabulary and figurative language, theme and big ideas). The form also includes a link to a goal setting conference video that will provide direction on how to engage the reader in goal setting.
Begin your teaching with a 5 minute goal setting conference. Use this script to guide your conversation and teaching.
Use these Teaching Forms to plan your week, create a class profile, take notes and help your students think about they can work on as readers.
Please use this google sheet to check out and return books. Currently, we only have one copy of each book, so please take care to return the book as quickly as possible. Books should not be sent home with students. Thank you!
