In general, your hip should function and feel better with time. 'How long will it last?' is a frequent question. The answer is not a simple one. If the hip components are placed in the correct position, with a time-tested implant design with good fundamentals, it is reasonable to expect your hip will likely last longer than you will.
The long-term clinical data we have is a mix of different designs, materials, surgeons, and techniques. Some recent information suggests that on average, 25-35 years is a supported answer, but looking closely at the data suggests that the hips that fail are due to technical issues such as component malposition, infection or trauma, and not usually "wearing out".
There have been early failures that were the results of materials and implants with design and manufacturing issues that took time to identify. We have not used these implant families for 20-30 years. Having a simple, fundamentally sound implant is best. Most of the large implant manufacturers latest designs are nearly identical, and support the idea that we are arriving at a concensus optimal implant design.
Long-term clinical follow up is offered at 5 year intervals or for any concerning symptoms. It is exceedingly rare to observe any change or wear of the implant.
