Welcome! This site is intended to serve as an introduction and to answer a lot of questions about hip arthritis and hip replacement, and to serve as a guide for my patients during the surgical experience.
My medical training was completed at the University of Washington School of Medicine. I graduated with Honors in 2003. Since 2009 I have been an educator, researcher, and Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Arizona. I am a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Fellow of the American Orthopedic Association, and the American Academy of Hip and Knee Surgeons.
Since 2009, I have been performing primary and revision hip arthroplasty, and now perform only hip arthroplasty exclusively since 2017. Dr. John Ruth and I were the first surgeons to begin using the anterior technique in Southern Arizona at University Medical Center in 2011. My formal fellowship training included management of complex pelvic and hip trauma, and as part of my work in this area I performed a large volume of primary and revision hip arthroplasty. Although the anterior approach has existed in some form for decades, its introduction to the mainstream largely began with Dr. Joel Matta. He was also a pelvic and acetabular trauma surgeon prior to becoming a hip arthroplasty specialist. I visited his center in Santa Monica, California and worked with him in 2012. Since that time I have developed my techniques and methods along his framework.
Currently, I perform between 12-16 hip replacements weekly. It is rewarding work. People reliably do well and the field is always advancing. Please explore this web site to get my perspective on hip pathology and its treatment. Thank you for visiting and I hope you find it useful.
