The Great Mills Marching Band had another outstanding performance last weekend at Huntingtown High School!
The Hornets earned a score of 80.4, showing an incredible eight-point increase from our previous competition and earning 3rd Place in Group 1A!
We are so proud of the continued growth, hard work, and determination of our students as we move through the season. Eight points of growth in one week is something to celebrate!
Way to go, Great Mills!
There was no competition today, but the Great Mills High School Marching Band still had a fantastic day of music and community!
During our mid-season rehearsal, parents and family members were invited to join us and get a firsthand look at what it is like to be a member of the GMHS Marching Band. Families had the opportunity to experience the rehearsal process, see the hard work that goes into preparing our show, and better understand the commitment, teamwork, and energy our students bring to every performance.
It was a great chance to celebrate how far the band has come this season while bringing our students and families together.
Thank you to everyone who joined us and continues to support the GMHS Marching Band!
The Great Mills High School Marching Band traveled to the 2026 USBands Marine Corps Invitational last week for another strong performance of Siren Song.
The Hornets earned a score of 72.4 and placed 3rd in Group 1A, improving their score by two points from their previous competition. The performance also marked an important milestone for the season, with all of Part 3 on the field for the first time.
We are proud of the continued growth, hard work, and dedication our students are showing each week. With several performances still ahead, the band is continuing to refine the show and build toward a strong finish to the season.
The Great Mills High School Band had a busy and exciting day on Saturday, September 26! Students began the day by proudly representing GMHS in the annual St. Mary’s County Fair Day Parade, bringing Hornet pride and school spirit to the community.
Later that day, the GMHS Marching Band took the field at Chopticon High School with their 2026 production, Siren Song. The Hornets earned a score of 70.4 and placed 4th in A Class, Group 1.
We are incredibly proud of our students for their hard work, musicianship, and professionalism throughout a full day of performances. Thank you to our families, staff, volunteers, and Band Boosters for their continued support of the Great Mills High School Band Program.

Another great day for the Great Mills High School Marching Band!
Today, the Hornets performed at Patuxent High School and earned 3rd Place in Class 1A with a score of 68.3!
Even more exciting, that score represents a 4-point increase from last week. That kind of growth reflects the hard work, focus, and commitment our students continue to bring to every rehearsal and performance.
We are proud of the progress this group is making and excited to keep building throughout the season.
Congratulations, Hornets! Keep growing!
Thank you to everyone who helped make today’s Great Mills Classic such a wonderful event!
To all of the participating bands and their directors and staff—thank you for bringing your students, your music, and your energy to Great Mills. It was a privilege to welcome you to our campus and celebrate the hard work of so many outstanding student musicians.
A huge thank you to our GMHS Band Boosters, volunteers, parents, staff members, and students who gave their time and energy to make today possible. From concessions and hospitality to parking, admissions, equipment, setup, cleanup, and everything in between, events like this simply cannot happen without an incredible team working behind the scenes.
We are also incredibly grateful to the Great Mills High School and Southern Maryland community for coming out to support these students and the marching arts. Seeing the stands filled with families, friends, alumni, and supporters made the day even more special.
Hosting a marching band show takes a tremendous amount of work, and we are so thankful for everyone who played a part in making today a success.
Thank you for supporting the Great Mills High School Band and for helping us make the Great Mills Classic a day our students will remember.
See you next year at the Great Mills Classic!
Two Weeks of Growth: GMHS Band Camp 2026
The Great Mills High School Marching Band wrapped up an exciting two weeks of band camp with tremendous progress both on and off the field! Students learned new warmups, strengthened their instrumental and marching skills, and spent time getting to know their fellow band members as they worked together toward a common goal.
One of the biggest accomplishments of camp was putting Movement 1 of our 2026 field show, Siren Song, on the field. We finished our second week with valuable rehearsal experience on the Great Mills High School athletic field turf, giving students their first opportunity to bring together the music and movement they have worked so hard to learn.
Throughout camp, our students were supported by a wonderful group of instructional techs and led on the field by Drum Major Hannah. We even welcomed a few special guest marchers—Principal Dothard and Chief Mack—who joined the band for some time on the field!
A special thank you goes to Mr. Ramsey, our Band Director, for his leadership and dedication throughout camp, as well as to everyone who helped make these two weeks a success.
Band camp may be over, but our season is just beginning! Regular rehearsals begin next week as we prepare for our first performance of the season—the Great Mills Classic on Saturday, September 12, right here at Great Mills High School. We can’t wait to share Siren Song with our families, friends, and community!
Go Hornets!
A Strong Start to the Season!
The Great Mills High School Marching Band kicked off the summer with an outstanding Parade Camp, where students dedicated several days to refining marching fundamentals, parade music, and building the teamwork that defines our program. From first-year members to veteran leaders, everyone showed tremendous enthusiasm, focus, and a commitment to excellence.
Following the conclusion of camp, we learned the unfortunate news that the Fairfax Fourth of July Parade had been canceled. While we were certainly disappointed that we didn't have the opportunity to showcase all of the hard work our students had put in during Parade Camp, we are incredibly proud of the effort, dedication, and positive attitude everyone displayed throughout the week.
The progress made during Parade Camp has us excited for what lies ahead. With a solid foundation already in place, we are looking forward to an incredible Band Camp (August 3rd-13th!!) as we prepare our 2026 marching season and our show, "Siren Song." We can't wait to welcome everyone back, continue growing together, and showcase the hard work of our talented students throughout the fall.
Thank you to our students, staff, families, and Band Boosters for your continued support. The future is bright for the Great Mills High School Band—and we're just getting started!
