Mechanicsville Elementary (approximately 300 students)
Elms staff and volunteers provided planning, materials, and instructional support for Mechanicsville Elementary's Green Day in May. One lesson for grades 3 - 5 involved creating a "Lasagna Garden" (see below)
What is a Lasagna Garden? It's a no-dig, no-till way to garden. Elms staff (Staci, Margarita and Megan) assisted with gathering materials and designing three Lasagna Gardens at Mechanicsville Elementary School, May 2018
Students in grades 3-5 helped gather compost, straw and other materials, such as cardboard and shredded paper, to be added with planting soil provided by The Elms.
Students learned that the paper and cardboard were carbon materials that would break down and help the garden to produce.
Here is a finalized Lasagna Garden planted with squash and pumpkins.

The Elms provides free Native Plants from our Native Plant Nursery to schools and community organizations.

Leonardtown Middle School (approximately 300 students)
The Elms provided support to Leonardtown Middle School 7th grade science and social studies classes as they began planning a rain garden.
1-10-18 meeting with LMS administrators and teachers, and SMCPS curriculum and facilities representatives to determine possible sites for a rain garden.
Looking for "lessons learned": Years and names of SMCPS schools which have installed rain gardens.
