(MHEC)
MHEC is a Maryland state government agency and the State of Maryland's higher education coordinating board. It is responsible for establishing statewide policies for Maryland public and private colleges and universities, as well as for-profit career schools. MHEC also administers State financial aid programs that impact students on a statewide basis.
MDCAPS is MHEC's comprehensive financial aid system that allows us to process State scholarship applications. To use MDCAPS, you must first create a student login.
Maryland Financial Aid will open on October 1, 2025
Free Application for Federal Student Aid is now open!
For Fall 2026, you will fill out the 2026-2027 Form and use 2024 tax information.
The FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is the primary government form used to determine your eligibility for financial assistance to pay for college, career school, or graduate school.
What it Provides
Submitting the FAFSA is the only way to apply for federal student aid, which includes:
Grants: Need-based "free money" that generally doesn't have to be repaid, such as the Federal Pell Grant.
Work-Study: Programs that provide part-time jobs for students with financial need.
Federal Student Loans: Borrowed money from the government that must be repaid with interest, often with more favorable terms than private loans.
State & School Aid: Many states and individual colleges use FAFSA data to award their own grants and scholarships.
