In alignment with the Maryland Blueprint for the Future, the St. Mary’s County Public Schools Career Counseling Program empowers students to connect their daily learning with post-graduation planning. The Career Counseling Program fosters an understanding of the link between academics, educational planning, and career preparation.
Delivered in partnership with Workforce Development and the College of Southern Maryland, the Career Counseling Program provides students with practical career exploration experiences, career development lessons, and meaningful conversations with Career Advisors. SchoolLinks software is used to collect data on student career values, interests, and personality traits, for individual student career planning and decision-making. Career advisors use the RIASEC themes (Realistic, Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional) to help align students' personality traits with the world of work.
St. Mary’s County Public Schools values the holistic growth of our students, recognizing that academic, career, and social /emotional development are all crucial for students’ present and future success.

Q: What is dual enrollment and how can I access it?
A: Dual Enrollment on Campus or online allows you to earn college credit at a CSM campus or online while satisfying your high school graduation requirements.
For dual enrollment in school, you can receive college credits for successfully completing eligible courses, regardless of grade level, and you’ll take these classes in your high school classroom instead of at a CSM campus.
Speak with your high school counselor about taking Dual Enrollment classes on a CSM campus to ensure that you are eligible to participate in the program and to review graduation requirements
The college and career center can support but cannot determine eligibility.
Q: If a student wanted to take winter classes, is that available to them if they didn't make the fall dual enrollment deadline?
A: Students interested in enrolling in winter term courses may do so. All required documentation needs to be submitted by the December 15 deadline to do so. Please note that the Dual Enrollment form will be available in October.
Just a reminder, SMCPS only covers up to four approved dual enrollment courses per academic year during the fall and spring semesters, they do not cover costs for winter term courses.
However, students will receive a 25% tuition discount for winter courses. The student will just be responsible for the remaining tuition and any associated fees during these semesters.

Enlisting in the military during your senior year of high school is a streamlined process that allows you to secure a career path before graduation.
1. Initial Steps (Start as Soon as Possible)
Research & Choose a Branch: Decide between the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, or Space Force based on your career interests.
Contact a Recruiter: Your recruiter is your primary guide. They will help you gather required documents (Social Security card, birth certificate, and high school transcript) and schedule your testing.
Verify Requirements: You must be 17 years old with parental consent to enlist while still in high school. You must also be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.
2. Testing and Evaluation
Take the ASVAB: This multiple-choice exam measures your aptitudes in areas like math and science to determine which military jobs you qualify for. Many high schools offer this test on-site. (We offer this twice a year at Chopticon)
Medical Exam at MEPS: You will visit a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) for a full physical, including vision, hearing, and blood tests, to ensure you meet fitness standards.
3. The Delayed Entry Program (DEP)
Most high school seniors join via the Delayed Entry Program (DEP).
Commit Now, Ship Later: You sign a contract and take the Oath of Enlistment while still in school.
Reservations: This "locks in" your specific job specialty (MOS) and sets a "ship date" for basic training that occurs after your 2026 graduation.
Preparation: While in the DEP, you may attend periodic meetings or drills to prepare for the physical and mental rigors of boot camp.
4. Transition to Service
Maintain Eligibility: You must successfully graduate from high school and avoid legal or medical issues to remain eligible for your ship date.
Shipping Out: Once you graduate, you will report back to MEPS to be formally discharged from the DEP and sworn into active duty before heading to basic training.
Important Note for 2026 Seniors: As of August 2025, new policies for the Army's FSPC ARMS or 09M programs prohibit 2026 seniors from enlisting specifically into those tracks; consult a recruiter for alternative standard enlistment options.
