For bachelors degree holders

Interested in pursuing our MAT program at St. Mary's College? We offer certification in the following areas:

• Elementary (grades 1-6) and elementary with early childhood (preK-6)
• Art, music, Spanish, French and Chinese (grades k-12)
• Biology, chemistry, physics, math, English, history, social studies and theater (grades 7-12)

Our MAT program begins every year in July and ends the following May. Costs and financial aid information are available here.

Each certification area has specific prerequisites which are not flexible. Prerequisites can be found here; scroll to the second page for generic course names and descriptions. If you are missing prerequisites, they can be completed at any institution. Missing prerequisites can be completed at most Maryland community colleges. (Articulation agreements with most Maryland community colleges can be found here; click to the second tab to see the equivalent courses). All education prerequisites can also be completed in one intense semester at St. Mary's.

We do not have an online option; MAT students must be able to drive to St. Mary's College of Maryland on a regular basis, and will be placed in a student teaching internship within the St. Mary's County Public Schools.

Application information can be found here. Note that several tests are required for admission; the specific tests for each certification area can be found on the prerequisite forms. Applicants with degrees from any institution except SMCM are required to get a score of 297 or above on the GRE.
