The INTERN must keep a reflection notebook (print or electronic) of teaching experiences and lesson plans in which the intern participates as teacher or co-teacher (whether written solely by the mentor teacher, collaboratively, or independently) with annotations/ reflections written on the plan after the lesson. This can be handwritten, typed, or a combination of both as desired/needed.
Generally, the reflection notebook may be completed by taking down informal reflections throughout the week, that might be thought of as "in action," followed by writing up a more formal reflection of the week on Friday (or perhaps sometimes over the weekend) that can be thought of as reflection "on action." Each intern can develop their own style and means of keeping up with this.
The Mentor Teacher and intern will refer to this notebook as the basis for the daily feedback between the mentor and intern. Intern should also take daily feedback notes in this binder.
The College Supervisor will also review this notebook as part of the observation evaluation process.
For all independently created lesson planning, the INTERN must submit weekly plans to the Mentor Teacher the week prior to teaching the lessons – specific day to be determined by the Mentor Teacher.
The Mentor Teacher provides INTERN feedback for all lesson plans and instruction throughout the internship.
All lesson plans for formal observations by the College Supervisor MUST be written and e-mailed as attachments at least 48 hours in advance.
The INTERN is responsible for collecting and filing all evaluative documents including observation forms, midpoint/final evaluations, and professionalism checklists. INTERN files must be complete for licensure.
The Mentor Teacher participates in all observation and evaluation conferences, provides INTERN feedback daily, and conferences with the INTERN regarding all professionalism checklists.
The College Supervisor schedules timely conferences, provides detailed observation notes, and balances the feedback on interns’ strengths and challenge areas. Signed forms are held by the INTERN for filing.
NOTE: The term “lesson/class period” throughout this document is used to address the different structures of elementary and secondary schools. The word “lesson” applies to elementary interns, while “class period” applies to secondary interns. Observations should last about 45 minutes each for all interns, except the combined Observation 5/6 which is doubled.
Interns on Campus: June 30-August 8
ANCHOR PLACEMENT: August 18-October 3
The internship begins at the beginning of the school year to provide Interns the opportunity to participate in the opening of a school year and observe how the classroom procedures are established. Interns also begin to see how the curriculum translates into unit and daily lesson plans and how lesson plans are written and delivered. Interns co-teach with mentors as soon as possible once the intern becomes acclimated and the mentor determines readiness. The intern will teach the formal observation lesson independently, but this lesson may be co-planned with the mentor.
