A Guide to Composting at SMCM
Composting is a way of recycling food scraps that keeps organic matter out of landfill and replenishes our soil. Our goal is to promote campus composting for both new and experienced composters. Here's how to get started:
Step 1: Fill out the compost bin request form below
Step 2: Familiarize yourself with the guides to composting
Step 3: Put out your bin for pick-up and transport to the Kate Farm
You CAN
Compost
Fruit and vegetable scraps
Egg shells
Coffee grounds
Tea bags (minus staples)
Newspaper and paper towels
Leaves and grass clippings
Old (non-diseased) plants or wilted flowers
You CAN'T
Compost:
Meat, Fish or bones
Dairy products
Fats, oils, and grease (including peanut butter)
inorganic trash & recycling
Highly processed foods
Non-organic material like plastic, trash & metal
Pet waste, cat litter
