The Kate Farm is buzzing with a history of bee hotel activity.
Environmental Studies major F. Kaak ('21) completed a St. Mary's Project on solitary bee life lessons that included the construction of nine mason bee hotels.
Under the leadership of Kate Farm Intern J. Cleaver (SU '25) and Sustainability Club President K. Kirby ('25), a group of student volunteers assembled several times in SP '25 to construct mounting posts, decorate each bee hotel according to one of the nine "life lessons," and install at The Kate Farm.
In May 2025, Dorothy Birch and students in the Natural Resources program at the James A. Forrest Career & Technology Center (Leonardtown High School) assisted with bee hotel installation and visited The Kate Farm to donate a bee hotel of their own design and construction.
Providing habitat and nesting sites for solitary bees aids pollination efforts, raises awareness of native pollinators, and supports conservation efforts at The Kate Farm.
