Sphagnum moss forms dense clumps around swamps and bogs. These mossy clumps form on acidic cliffs and soils and are most commonly used as a soil structure enhancer or conditioner. Throughout time, the growth and decay of Sphagnum moss can lead to peat-forming conditions and healthier waterways when planted on or near the edges of waterways.
Sphagnum moss can hold up to 20 times their weight in water, It can also increase the acidity of surrounding water due to the metabolic processes it undergoes when growing. This process allows for a reduction in bacterial action and prevents decay. Sphagnum also works as a positive growing ecosystem and many native plants will grow best when growing alongside it.
Leaf: Veinless phyllids and stem cortex containing enlarged dead cells with external openings for water to enter: non-vascular
