Can you check on my child throughout the year?
I regularly check in with students based on their individual needs. I maintain communication with teachers who express concerns about their students and ensure appropriate follow-up. If a parent has a concern, they are welcome to email or call me directly. Teachers or parents with concerns can complete the care-team referral form.
Can you stay in contact with parents throughout the year?
For the 2025-2026 school year, I will be sharing a monthly newsletter that includes information about the topics covered in guidance lessons, along with other helpful resources and updates. I am always available to speak with parents about their student. However, please note that due to confidentiality, I am unable to share specific details about what your student has shared with me. I can provide general observations on how your student is doing, but I cannot discuss private conversations.
Confidentiality will only be broken in the following situations:
If someone is hurting your child
If your child expresses a desire to hurt themselves
If your child expresses a desire to hurt someone else
If your child gives me permission to share what they have said
Can teachers/other students overhear what my child is saying to you?
No. My office door remains closed whenever I am meeting with a student to ensure privacy. A sign outside my door indicates when I am in a session. Maintaining confidentiality is a cornerstone of my comprehensive counseling program. The only exceptions to break confidentiality are the four situations listed above.
When can a student see you, and how available are you to students?
Students are welcome to come see me whenever they need support. If I am not available, they can fill out a self-referral form, or send me an email. I address referrals in the order they are received, unless a crisis situation requires immediate attention. Additionally, students can ask their teacher to contact me to help schedule a time to meet.
Do you do small group counseling? Individual counseling?
Yes, I provide both small group and individual counseling on a short-term basis. Small groups typically meet for 6 to 8 sessions, while individual counseling usually involves 2 to 3 sessions. School counseling is designed to offer short-term support. If a student requires long-term mental health services, I will refer them to appropriate outside resources.
Do you have any virtual mental health services through the school?
Yes! SMCISD partners with TCHATT and Daybreak. These programs offer virtual counseling sessions with licensed mental health professionals. Students typically receive 5–6 sessions, which can be conducted at school using their device. The only requirement is that a parent or guardian logs in during the initial session to provide any necessary information that the school counselor may not have. For each session that follows, a parent must also check in briefly to help schedule the next appointment.
Where is your office located in the school?
I have two locations on campus. My office is located in the front office, right in between the assistant principal and the principals office. Just ask Ms. Diana where to find me! My classroom is right next to the art room and cafeteria. My classroom is a carnival theme, so just look for all the bright colors, you can't miss it! Other than that, you can find me riding my electric scooter through the hallways making students laugh!
Why should I contact you if my child is having a difficult time or needs someone to talk to?
Mental health plays a vital role in a person’s overall well-being. If a student is feeling overwhelmed or needs someone to talk to, it’s important they have access to a supportive, trusted adult who can listen and help them work through challenges. Sometimes, students prefer speaking with someone outside of their family. I’m here to provide that support and be a resource for them.
How long does it take for you to respond to phone calls/emails/text messages?
Due to my schedule, it may take me a little longer to respond to phone calls, emails, or messages. I follow a 24-hour response policy and do my best to reply within that timeframe. In some cases, I may send a quick email to confirm that I received your message and will follow up as soon as I’m available.
