Read more about the mathematical modelling process
This overall expectation has no specific expectations. Mathematical modelling is an iterative and interconnected process that is applied to various contexts, allowing students to bring in learning from other strands. Students’ demonstration of the process of mathematical modelling, as they apply concepts and skills learned in other strands, is assessed and evaluated.
Mathematical Modelling IS...
a process
Involves ill-defined problems
Problem is open at the beginning, middle, and end
Involves decision making
Assumptions must be made and stated
Data is collected
A model is determined/chosen
Has potential for multiple solutions
Mathematical Modelling Is NOT...
A product
A problem that is closed at the beginning and end and only offers openness in the middle (solution method)
A question with all the information given
A question with a single correct answer
The answer to a computation problem
A word problem that frames a computation problem
Representing a pattern using pattern blocks OR using code
See the sample tasks provided by Division below. Note that these could be in multiple divisions.

Here are some sample Modelling Tasks for you to consider:
Let’s set up a lemonade stand (plan a class picnic, set up sports day)!
How much does it cost to own a pet?
Let’s plant a vegetable garden.
We need to set up the gym for an assembly - how will we all fit?
See the lesson below from OAME as well as the Slides we've begun for you to make a copy and apply for your class' process.

Let's consider a few possible Modelling Task examples:
How can we plan a school bus route that will minimize students’ time on the bus?
What uses more water – a shower or a bath?
A new subdivision is being built. Where do we place the fire station? Schools?
Let’s take charge of the Athletic Awards Dinner (Carlson, Wickstrom, Burroughs, & Fulton, 2016)
See the lesson from OAME as well as the Slides we've begun for you to make a copy and apply for your class' process.

Let's consider a few possible Modelling Task examples:
Intermediate
Do fast-food prices encourage poor eating habits?
How can helicopters in a ski area be positioned in an optimal way to help injured people as quickly as possible?
Your family is getting a new car, what is the best vehicle to buy?
What is better in an intersection – to have a roundabout or traffic lights. (Blum & Ferri, 2016)
