From the moment you wake up to the time you go to bed, you are constantly trying to make sense of interactions with our surroundings. Literacy is critical in helping us make sense of our world. Literacy can be defined as " the ability to read and write... knowledge of a particular subject, or a particular type of knowledge" (Cambridge University Press, 2021). Literacy is the use of language, images, & media to share information, discuss and think critically about texts and ideas. Oral Language, reading, writing, and media literacy are equally important to student success and are integrated across all curriculum areas.
Meaningful literacy instruction takes place in all classrooms, not just in English class. Although specific knowledge and skills are learned in English, every subject has a unique literacy demand and specific tasks that further developed and enhanced literacy skills. Educators and students are aware of the literacy requirements of their subject and understand that it is through literacy that meaning is made within their subject area content. Whether reading a novel vs reading a scientific scholarly article, students need to learn how to read different kinds of text, write and express themselves in the formats associated with each subject, and use content-specific vocabulary. In Grade 10, Ontario students take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test, which measures whether or not they are meeting the minimum standard for literacy across all subjects up to the end of Grade 9. This test is created and run by EQAO, which is the Education Quality and Accountability Office.
Successful completion of the literacy test is one of three main requirements students must meet to earn an Ontario Secondary School Diploma. (30+ credits, 40 hours of community service, & OSSLT passing grade)

What is the format of the test?
35 multiple choice questions and 2 open written response questions
What will you be assessed on?
You will be utilizing your reading and writing skills which include:
understanding explicitly and implicitly stated information
making connections between information and ideas
writing effectively using conventions (spelling, grammar, punctuation) to ensure clear communication
developing a main idea with supporting details
When?
The literacy test will be taking place in November.
