“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together. ” ~African Proverb
Damage to this pathway is clear, having been greatly eroded by storm surge. Please use the pathway responsibly by following all directive and warning signs. Thank you.
While sitting amongst this circle of granite that surrounds and supports you, notice the three trees on the other side of the pathway. These trees have provided shelter and food to wildlife for many years. They prevent erosion by holding the earth with their strong roots. Notice the diversity in the texture of the bark, the shape of their leaves, and how their branches move in the wind. Use your sense of touch, sight, and smell to explore the trees and this view.
Take a moment in this space and think of your place in community. Who, or what diverse elements make up your community? Do you recognize your unique attributes in contributing to a resilient community?
When I am among the trees,
especially the willows and the honey locust,
equally the beech, the oaks and the pines,
they give off such hints of gladness.
I would almost say that they save me, and daily.
I am so distant from the hope of myself,
in which I have goodness, and discernment,
and never hurry through the world
but walk slowly, and bow often.
Around me the trees stir in their leaves
and call out, “Stay awhile.”
The light flows from their branches.
And they call again, “It’s simple,” they say,
“and you too have come
into the world to do this, to go easy, to be filled
with light, and to shine.”
