Damage to this pathway is clear, having been greatly eroded by storm surge. Please use the pathway responsibly by following all directive and warning signs. Thank you.
The SMCC Restorative Walk utilizes the Spring Point Shoreway that meanders along the edge of the Southern Maine Community College campus. At specific stopping points, participants are invited to pause, take a moment to become present and reflect on life’s challenges and successes. The intention is to reduce stress and promote a better quality of life through self-care activities supported by the natural beauty of Casco Bay.
Participating in this activity can assist in the development of a Personal Climate Adaption Plan. It is undeniable that climate change is wreaking havoc with our mental health, regardless of who or where you are. The evident damage to the Spring Point Shoreway is concerning and producing much anxiety. Anxiety is a healthy response to a real threat, but if not attended to, it can become debilitating. Using the Restorative Walk is the first step in developing a Personal Climate Adaption Plan, which allows you to actively build resiliency and in turn strengthen mental health.
Each stopping point can be identified by a sign with the Cultivating Well-Being logo and a QR code. A prompt, specific to each point can be accessed by scanning the QR code with a cellphone. The prompts can also be accessed by visiting; https://sites.google.com/smccme.edu/wellnesswalk/wellness-walk .
There will be three prompt choices for each stopping point.
A sensory experience using the senses of touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing.
A reflective experience that will offer a brief exercise in reflective meditation.
A poetic experience. Each of the five stops will offer a poem that relates to the prompt and location.
As you begin to walk, acknowledge that in this moment you are free of all responsibility, expectation or demands of life. Take this time to focus on your wellbeing, you deserve it!
