Multilingual Considerations

• build phonological awareness in native language and English

• draw upon language similarities

• as much as possible, ensure student has the vocabulary for the words being used to develop phonological awareness

• focus instruction on language differences

• emphasize sounds that occur in English, but do not occur in home language

• capitalize on morphological similarities

• take advantage of a student's full language repertoire (translanguaging)

• intentional development of English oral language skills

• practice, practice, practice

• start developing breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge early

• draw upon students' cognate knowledge

• ensure review & reinforcement of vocabulary learning through read aloud, teacher-directed activities, listening to reading, outside of class word usage, and parent involvement

• support native language maintenance in the home (especially adding new vocabulary)

• Ensure comprehension instruction is direct and explicit

• Build English oral language

• Emphasize the transfer of strategies from native language to English

• Implement culturally responsive teaching practices
