Rashmi is an Assistant Professor in the department of chemical engineering at IIT Madras. She leads the Cell Engineering & Drug Delivery lab, focusing on employing synthetic biology for cell therapy applications and developing next-generation disease models for disease diagnosis and drug delivery. She earned her PhD from UT Austin with Prof. Debadyuti Ghosh, where she worked on drug transport and drug delivery for cancer treatment. As a postdoctoral associate at MIT with Prof. Ron Weiss, she gained expertise in synthetic biology, where she programmed human induced pluripotent stem cells to differentiate into endothelial cells in a spatiotemporally controlled manner, leading to patterned tissue formation. Her multidisciplinary research at IIT Madras intersects synthetic biology, bioengineering, chemical engineering, and drug delivery, addressing the challenges associated with the clinical translation of therapeutics.
