A Capstone is a culminating, student-driven project or experience that allows learners to demonstrate deep, real-world learning and mastery of academic and career readiness skills as part of Colorado’s Graduation Guidelines. Capstones are locally determined by schools and can include research, problem-based projects, portfolios, performances, community service, or work-based learning experiences that require students to apply knowledge and skills they’ve developed over time. A quality Capstone process involves planning, reflection, presentation, and the creation of meaningful evidence of learning that shows college and career readiness in reading, writing, communication, mathematics, and other essential skills.
This page will include resources and a step-by-step process for completing a Capstone, including examples of Capstone projects, guidance on expectations, sample rubrics, and exemplars of student work to support learners and educators.
The Colorado Department of Education’s Capstone page provides resources and guidance for implementing Capstone projects as part of the Colorado Graduation Guidelines, which allow students to demonstrate deep learning and readiness for life after high school through extended, real-world work such as research, portfolios, performance tasks, or community-connected projects. The page includes links to tools such as step-by-step implementation guides, rubrics, proposal and product examples, frequently asked questions, community expert agreement forms, and sample project materials to support educators, students, and partners in designing, assessing, and completing meaningful Capstone experiences that align with state expectations.
