Children learn to use the toilet on their own at different ages. Some children learn quickly, while others need more time and support. This is a normal part of growing up.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) explains that learning to use the toilet involves both physical and emotional development. Children need to learn how to:
Recognize when their body needs to use the toilet.
Pull their pants and underwear up and down.
Follow the steps for using the toilet.
Feel ready and comfortable using the toilet independently.
Our TK classrooms support children and families as children learn to use the toilet. We provide the following support:
Every classroom has a toileting kit with needed supplies.
Paraeducators are trained to help children learn to use the toilet independently.
Classrooms have a bathroom inside or are located near a bathroom.
Teachers create a caring and supportive environment where children feel comfortable learning these skills.
Families can request a meeting with school staff to create a toileting plan that meets their child's needs.
We understand that every child develops at their own pace, and we work with families to help children become more independent.
