The Phase 1 Project Team reviewed an extensive set of resources and materials. Below are just a few of these materials here to raise awareness across the University about the research on effective teaching, learning sciences, and evidence-informed evaluation of teaching. We encourage all members of the SLU community to review these materials, as well, to help build a foundation of common understanding.
The TEP Phase 1 Project Team relied on a number of resources in developing SLU’s Teaching Effectiveness Framework. These included internal resources that articulate SLU-specific priorities for effective teaching, sample evidence-based frameworks from other institutions, and a selection of meta-analyses and other peer-reviewed research on teaching and learning.
This list of references highlights key resources that informed the work. It is important to note that it would not be possible to provide an exhaustive list of peer-reviewed research on teaching, or of the research that informed individual team members’ engagement in this effort. Several team members have spent their careers immersed in the rich literature on teaching and learning. Well-designed research studies appear in education-focused publications in nearly all disciplines. And the research on how humans learn, and the implications for teaching, is extensive and well-designed.
Ultimately, every item listed as an Essential Practice in SLU's framework is supported by extensive scholarship, and while such research continues to evolve, much of the research on items in the framework is considered settled.
