LET THE GIRL BE UGANDA
ABOUT US
"Arise and Overcome"
Let The Girl Be Uganda (LEGIBE), founded in May, 2022 is an organisation aiming to empower vulnerable girls in Mukono District around the shores of Lake Victoria, Uganda through education and health. Girls around the shores of Lake Victoria are often left vulnerable, exposed to STIs and HIV, and are sometimes pregnant. LEGIBE strives to protect Mukono District girls from sexual and labor exploitation.
Our project area covers two Sub-Counties with a population of 5,000 girls and teenage mothers who are largely vulnerable, destitute and socially underprivileged. Only a few of these can access education and health facilities. Most of these girls' lives are associated with atrocities from sexual abuse, rape, family rejection, poverty, domestic violence, neglect, etc.
Our community suffers a scarcity of water for domestic use, leaving girls to fetch it from distant, unsafe wells dug in forests and bushy places where many of them fall victim to rape. Most families in our community still follow the old traditional and cultural customs that require only girls to do house chores like gardening, fetching water and firewood, and taking care of young children.
Let The Girl Be Uganda, strives to address these problems through skills focused education, health services, and mobilizing and creating awareness campaigns in communities, for the well-being of girls and teenage mothers. We are a certified and registered non-profit organisation, number 161885428.

Our five programs
"Let The Girl Be-Uganda (LEGIBE)," empowers vulnerable girls and teenage mothers in our community to save them from sexual and labor exploitation. We aim to achieve this through our five thematic programs:
Why Donations Help Us
Instilling Hope, Patience, and Confidence
Your donations will help LEGIBE purchase materials for the girls to craft and create with, period and hygiene products, books and educational supplies, materials for infants and children the girls have been left to raise, and most importantly they pay for the girls' tuitions.
LEGIBE provides a safe and welcoming community for these girls to come together and hone their independent skills in textiles so they can make money for themselves, music and dance to spark and inspire joy, and counseling so that these girls can speak about and process what they have experienced. Also, it is important to us to send the girls to school as it is often the lack of tuition that gets in the way of these girls' futures. Until we can send all the girls to school we engage them with the textiles and provide and education with the materials and knowledge we have. We appreciate your time and donations, thank you!

David Kawanuka, Director & Founder
Social/Community Worker, David Kawanuka founded "Let The Girl Be-Uganda (LEGIBE) in May, 2022 after seeing what many young girls in Mukono District go through. LEGIBE operates in the rural areas of Lake Victoria's shores, where men take advantage of vulnerable girls who don't go to school due to lack of tuition, and they exploit them! After a careful consultation from the local leaders, David started a nonprofit organization to help these girls.
