Cultivating Cultural Humility and Multiple Cultural Fluency for Building Relationships Across Difference

Cultural humility is a relational practice for sustaining an "other focus," self-critique, openness, and an appetite for lifelong learning about those who occupy different social locations and experiences. Cultural humility is being utilized in professional spaces for building relationships and developing multiple cultural fluencies for dialogue across differences. This workshop will provide introductory concepts and skills for cultivating new practices in your daily work and personal life.
Dr. Katie Heiden-Rootes is a professor in the department of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine and has a dual appointment as an Assistant Vice President in the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement at Saint Louis University. Her scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Missouri Foundation for Health, and the National Science Foundation. Her scholarship focuses on the advancement of training and research on health with the LGBTQIA+ community and their families and intersectional faculty equity and culture change within higher education. In her academic home, she teaches courses and lectures on human sexuality and gender, cultural humility, and qualitative research. Her work today is marked by the celebration of difference, engaging in difficult dialogue, and becoming comfortable in discomfort.
Navigating the Seas of Change

It is said that there is one constant in life and it's change. While it can feel that way, everyone has a different way of perceiving change and managing it in their own lives. This webinar will go over different types of change and how people typically react to it. We will also review items we can do to best navigate change for ourselves.
Aaron Mensinger works in Human Resources as the Learning and Development Manager for the university. Prior to coming to the university, he has worked in multiple organizations supporting the training and development of staff and leaders. He has also provided coaching for leaders and teams regarding employee engagement and team building. Aaron possesses a Masters in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
