FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Students can apply for federal financial aid by completing and submitting the FAFSA. The U.S. Department of Education uses FAFSA information to determine a student's eligibility for need-based federal aid, including Federal Pell Grants, Federal Student Loans, and Federal Work-Study. This information is then forwarded to institutions of higher education who calculate financial aid awards for each admitted student.
Federal financial aid is available to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and certain eligible non-citizens. For example, students who have a T visa or a parent with a T-1 visa are eligible to receive federal financial aid.
Students will need a FAFSA on file to qualify for most state and institutional aid, including grants and scholarships.
FAFSA Application Available: December 1
Texas State Priority Completion Deadline: January 15 (Students wanting to attend a college or university in Texas will need to complete the FAFSA before January 15 to ensure their desired institution receives the FAFSA application by the state priority deadline.
Federal Completion Deadline: June 30
Required Information to Complete FAFSA
To complete the FAFSA, you will need:
Your Social Security Number
Your Registration Number (if you are not a U.S. citizen)
Your federal income tax returns, W-2s, and other records of money earned
For the 2024-2025 FAFSA, you will need your 2023 income tax return and financial information
Records of untaxed income (if applicable)
An FSA ID to sign electronically
Schools you are will be attending/interested in attending
If you are a dependent student, then you will need most of the above information for your parent(s) as well.
