Essential Question: How have humans and animals in the past and in the present protected themselves from the effects of the sun on earth's surface?
Science: This lesson uses the design thinking process to investigate how to protect living things from the warming effects of sunlight on a given area. Students will design and build their own shade structures to protect Jake the snake from getting too hot in the sun! They will also track the weather to see how many days of the month Jake the Snake will need protection.
Social Studies: In this lesson, students learn about shade structures from long ago and today, comparing how they are alike and different. Students understand that history relates to the shade structures we have today!

Essential Question: How have humans and animals in the past and present designed forms of transportation that can push or pull cargo safely?
Science: Students will gain an understanding of pushes and pulls by using design thinking to create their own wagon. Students will build the wagon, test its pulling and pushing capacity, and use their wagon to safely transport a dog.
Social Studies: In this lesson, students learn the importance of following rules, sharing and taking turns. Students learn about transportation in earlier times and how their lives would be different if they lived in the past when it came to getting place to place.

Essential Question: How might we work together to build a community that can prepare and protect people from extreme weather scenarios?
Science: Students work collaboratively use the engineering design process to design and build their own community using their knowledge of 2d and 3d shapes. Students investigate weather in their community and the different ways to help reduce human impact on the earth's resources (land, air, water).
Social Studies: Students will establish and learn about the essential businesses and jobs of a community. Students establish locations of people, places, environments and traffic symbols of the city and design and build a map incorporating all key locations of the community!
