SLOHS Performing Arts: A new era of theatre
MAY 13, 2021

Worlds collide this fall as Drama Club, Iambic Pentameter, and the Improv Team are dissolved into a brand-new arts organization.
Drama Club has been a cornerstone of the SLOHS arts community for decades.
Big news hit the Drama Club this Tuesday with the announcement that the three theatrical clubs under adviser Noelle Eben's jurisdiction, Drama, Iambic Pentameter, and Improv, will be dissolved into one large umbrella organization. The new club, called SLOHS Performing Arts, will take effect beginning in 2021–2022. Eben cited a few reasons for the merge, the most significant being the consolidation of resources and the formalization of preexisting ties between the old clubs. This is also good news for Iambic Pentameter and Improv, which both were facing closure due to talent shortages in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. Drama Club, on the other hand, will feel a nice financial boost by the incorporation of funds from the Iambic Pentameter and Improv accounts.

Those aren't the only changes coming our way. Student leadership has also been totally restructured in light of the club refiguring. The new SLOHS Performing Arts will have (democratically elected, for the first time) a President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer, who will oversee the whole operation with Eben's assistance. Meanwhile, the old clubs' presidencies will be converted into commissioner positions. The Commissioner of Drama – formerly the Drama Club president – is a role that will be combined with the duties of the Vice President, as the most prominent of the old clubs' leaderships. The Improv Team will live on as the rebranded Department of Improv, led by a Commissioner of Improv; no changes to Improv operations have been announced yet, and their ever-popular live shows will continue as usual. Iambic Pentameter is also getting a facelift as the refreshed Department of Classics, led by a Commissioner of Classics; the new department will expand out of Shakespeare's works into other works of antiquity, and will also maintain the historical accuracy of mainstage productions.

Elections for this brand-new system occurred on Tuesday, where actresses Lindsay Smith, Charley Beck, and Ava Walsh were unanimously elected to the offices of president, secretary, and treasurer. The vice presidency went to a vote, closing last night at midnight, confirming Flannery Clausen as the winner. Applications for commissioner positions are expected to open later this month.
