SLUSD

While this epidemic is a problem that may seem daunting, there are people that are working to fix it. The San Leandro Unified School District (SLUSD) has vastly expanded their food services under DeAnne Cortes, the director of Food and Nutrition Services for the District.

The district not only participates in the federal free lunch program for low-income, they also offer breakfast, after-school snacks, free lunch summer program, dinner, and a mobil pantry for the community.

These resources are crucial for students that come from low income families. The free meals are full of nutrients and exceed the federal nutritional guidelines set. Without this easy access to healthy food, children are forced to turn to cost-efficient meals at fast food chains, or worse, spend their day learning on an empty stomach.
