Nursery
Our nursery at Greenhills Primary School provides a nurturing, stimulating and inclusive early learning environment where every child is supported to feel safe, valued and ready to learn. We are committed to giving children the very best start in their learning journey through high-quality play experiences, warm relationships and a strong focus on wellbeing.
Our practice is guided by the key national frameworks for Early Learning and Childcare in Scotland, including:
Curriculum for Excellence – Early Level
Realising the Ambition: Being Me
Getting it Right for Every Child (GIRFEC)
How Good is Our Early Learning and Childcare?
Building the Ambition (the foundations of our play-based pedagogy)
These documents shape our daily practice and ensure that everything we do is centred on the needs, rights and wellbeing of our children.
Learning through play
Our carefully planned play experiences:
Encourage curiosity, creativity and problem solving
Support the development of early literacy and numeracy skills
Promote independence and confidence
Provide opportunities for children to lead their own learning
Our skilled staff observe children closely, interact meaningfully and use these observations to plan responsive, personalised learning experiences that build on children’s interests and next steps.
A focus on wellbeing
Children’s wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. Through the GIRFEC approach and the SHANARRI wellbeing indicators, we ensure that all children are:
Safe, Healthy, Achieving, Nurtured, Active, Respected, Responsible and Included.
Positive, trusting relationships between staff, children and families help to create a secure environment where children feel happy, confident and ready to explore.
The learning environment
Our nursery offers a rich, enabling environment indoors and outdoors, where children can:
Investigate and explore
Be creative
Work together and independently
Take safe and managed risks
Develop their physical skills and coordination
Outdoor learning is a key part of our daily practice and provides meaningful, real-life contexts for learning.
Partnership with families
We recognise that parents and carers are children’s first and most important educators. We work in close partnership with families to:
Share learning and progress
Plan next steps together
Support children’s wellbeing and development
This strong partnership ensures continuity between home and nursery and helps every child to thrive.
Supporting every child
We are fully committed to inclusion and to meeting the needs of all learners. Through early identification, careful planning and partnership with other professionals where appropriate, we ensure that every child receives the support they need to succeed.
At Greenhills Nursery, our aim is to create a happy, caring and inspiring environment where children develop a love of learning, build strong relationships and gain the confidence and skills that will support them throughout their school journey and beyond.
