FAQ

Can I get Honors credit for music classes?

Yes, you can receive Honors credit for some music classes. At the beginning of the school year, ask your teacher to place you in the Honors version of the class and fill out the related registration form.

What can I take if I have no experience?

The classes that require no previous experience are Guitar 1, Piano 1, Music Technology, Technical Theatre, Drama/Musical Theatre 1, and Concert Choir.

What if I quit music at CCMS but want to continue here?

That's completely fine! If you would like to pursue music during your years at South Kingstown High, we encourage you! Although, if you want to join the South Kingstown Band, String Ensemble, or Symphony Orchestra, our music teacher recommends that you contact a private teacher of your instrument of choice to help you work up to playing at the high school level.

Where can I get an instrument?

South Kingstown has multiple local instrument shops, including Beekman Violin and Wakefield Music. Both of these stores have options to rent or purchase your instrument. South Kingstown High School also owns instruments that students can use, but there are a limited number of usable instruments, so contact your teacher and inform them that you need one as soon as you can.

Do I need to take private lessons?

Students are encouraged but not required to take private lessons in addition to their ensemble classes. If lessons are something you would be interested in, you can reach out to Mr. Muir or Mr. Benz for a list of private teachers.

What is the difference between Concert Choir and eSKape?

Both Concert Choir and eSKape are in-school singing groups taught by Mr. Muir.  Concert Choir is a large choir that does not require an audition. Concert Choir is an excellent way to hone your vocal skills and get singing practice in your schedule every week. eSKape is a smaller, more selective group that requires an audition. eSKape also requires higher musical skills and more advanced knowledge of singing and vocals. The eSKape group performs more complicated, difficult pieces that require a greater skill level to accomplish.

When are eSKape and Jazz Band auditions?

Auditions for eSKape and Jazz Band are held in the spring prior to the upcoming school year. If you are interested in being part of one of these ensembles but have not heard anything about auditions, please contact Mr. Benz (Jazz Band) or Mr. Muir (eSKape).

How do I become a part of a Rebel Theater Group production?

Attend the first after school meeting in the fall to join and get all the information for the year. You may also email Mr. Muir for more information.
