IS UNIVERSTIY A GOOD CHOICE FOR MY CHILD?
University is a good choice for your child if they:
Want the “uni experience”
Living semi-independently, making new friends with very different people, joining clubs and societies – these are all things that university can offer.
Love their subject
If your child wants to throw themselves into their studies because they love their chosen subject and want to know everything there is to know about it, university could be a good choice.
Want to go into a profession only accessible via university
There are many career paths which have been opened up to the apprenticeship route (see on Apprenticeship tab) but certain careers are currently only accessible via a university degree (or only widely accessible this way). This includes medicine, veterinary medicine, teaching and architecture.
UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS FOR 2023
For sixth formers thinking of applying to university this year, they will need to start focusing on what to include in their personal statement. So please do take a look at The Parents’ Guide to Personal Statements. There is also a free personal mind-map which is a great way for parents to talk through what they should include and start thinking about how they should phrase their interests and achievements. It’s also a good way to identify gaps while there’s still time to fill them too!
UCAS APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR 2023
For Medical & Oxbridge applicants, the deadline for applications is 15th October
For all other applications the deadline is 26th January 2022
PARENT SUPPORT AND ADVICE
Parents may also want to understand what their teens will be going through in the university application process and our specialist guide: The Parents’ Guide to University will answer all their questions. There’s also The Parents’ Guide to Degree Apprenticeships which outlines why this “earn while you learn” route to a degree is a great choice for some students but less suitable for others. Please click on the pictures above for links to these guides.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CHOOSE THE RIGHT UNIVERSITY FOR THEM
The toughest challenge here is putting aside your preferences as a parent and supporting your child in the choices that are right for them – particularly if they are polar opposites to your own. Don’t forget, it’s natural to feel protective of your children, but university provides a good opportunity for them to fly the nest in a protected environment. Please take a look at some of the important factors you and your child might want to consider together on: https://www.theparentsguideto.co.uk/post/helping-your-child-choose-the-right-university
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD CHOOSE THE RIGHT COURSE FOR THEM
With over 30,000 courses available the right course for your child is out there – it just might be tricky to find! There is plenty of information about university courses available so it’s worth researching diligently before making choices, rather than students relying on “my teacher recommends it”, “my parents took it”, or “I like the university”. Please take a look at some suggestions for things to consider when helping your child choose the right university course on:https://www.theparentsguideto.co.uk/post/helping-your-child-choose-the-right-university-course
THE PRO'S AND CON'S OF GOING TO UNIVERSITY
THE PRO'S OF GOING TO UNIVERSITY
Students can become experts in the subject they love – through 3+ years of intense, focused study.
University can prepare you for a specific career path – although many higher/degree apprenticeships now offer training for graduate careers.
Graduates earn more – but they can graduate with a higher/degree apprenticeship and earn while they study.
University gives students time to gain work experience – during the long summer vacations.
Students get a taste of independence –by living away from home in student halls or rented accommodation.
Students gain high-level transferable skills – such as analysis, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving.
It can broaden the mind – by exposing students to new people, ideas and places.
THE CON'S OF GOING TO UNIVERSITY
Students may not gain technical skills – many courses are theoretical instead of practical.
Students may not get employability skills – although they can gain these on work experience during the vacations, or choose to do a sandwich course with a year in Industry.
Contact time is less than at school – with more of a focus on independent, self-driven study.
Students graduate with a lot of debt – 2018 graduates left university with £36,000 of debt on average.
Students commit 3+ years of their life –so your child should consider whether three more years of education is for them.
Students are not guaranteed a graduate job –many graduates end up in temporary or entry-level jobs not graduate roles.
Lifetime earnings can be higher with an apprenticeship – those with a level 5+ apprenticeship typically earn more than traditional university graduates.
