The purpose of this program is to provide faculty a robust roadmap, which defines steps and support systems to ensure the development of rigorous online courses.
The goals of this program are the following:
To produce an online course that meets accreditation, university, and student standards and expectations.
Develop deeper relationships with more faculty and academic stakeholders throughout SJU
Increase usage of Universal Design for Learning principles across courses and programs
Improve the quality of the student experience as the quality of the process improves
Increase in online course developer’s instructional design self-efficacy
All faculty members are eligible to participate. Program Directors and Chairs work with the Registrar's Office to determine which courses will go through the program each semester. If you have a course you'd like to develop, reach out to your Program Director or Chair to initiate the process.
Both for-credit and non-credit classes can go through the Online Course Development Program. For-credit courses are decided by the Program Director or Chair and coordinated through the Registrar's Office. To initiate non-credit course development needs, please reach out using the Get Support page.
The Online Course Development Program is a twelve week, multi-phased process. Over those twelve weeks, Course Developers will work with a Learner Experience Designer to design the course, then it will get approved by the Academic Stakeholder. The Online Course Development Progam has Spring, Summer, and Fall semester cohorts each academic year.
There are several people involved in each course that gets developed.
Course Developer - the faculty member going through the program
Learner Experience Designer - a staff member from the Academic Technology Team in the Office of Information Technology who collaborates with the Course Developer to create the course
Academic Stakeholder - the Program Director or Chair who initiates and approves the course design
The Office of Information Technology, Provost's Office, Registrar's Office, and Payroll Office all play roles in the Online Course Development Program.
The Program for Online Course Development utilizes:
a Course Development Roadmap, which contains in-depth information about all three phases, workspaces, collaborative checklists, and more.
the Rubric for Online Learning Experiences (ROLE), which serves as an in-depth, independent way to evaluate any course.
the Instructional Equivalency Grid, which ensures that course have the correct amount of instructional hours to meet federal and state regulations, as well as Middlestates expectations.
Please reach out directly to the Academic Technology Team or email the Learner Experience Designer that you have been partnered with.
