The Central Intelligence Agency Library Publications “The World Factbook” web page provides a comprehensive history of South Sudan as well as the current status of the area based on 2017 statistics. It includes statistics in the areas of; Background, People and Society, Government, Economy, Energy, Communication, Transportation, Military and Security, Transnational Issues. Each topic is independently informative, when combined it presents a thorough understanding of the regions current challenges. Background and Transnational issues are of particular interest to our unit of study. The Background area references the 1983 disputes that relate to the character Salva’s setting in A Long Walk to Water "(1983-2005) in which perhaps 2.5 million people died - mostly civilians - due to starvation and drought.”(CIA web page) the Transitional portion includes the character of Nya’s setting and the current disputes and statistics on refugees and internally displaced persons.

The complexity of this text is difficult due to the subject specific vocabulary as well as the names of locations, ethnicities, regimes and persons. The vocabulary used to refer to types of established governments, types of conflicts, types of agreements are all necessary to comprehend this text. The page provides a clearly labeled map of the area. This assist in the reading, but adds to the time needed to fully internalize the information. Using this text a student would need to find the meaning from it or research the meaning of key vocabulary.
Teacher led: As students read information a list of vocabulary would evolve from the reading. The teacher could provide definitions and students could share in the looking up words to define them – Discussion of prior knowledge of South Sudan could be recorded whole class or in journals
Student groups -- look up the countries mentioned in relationship to Southern Sudan, geographically, conflict, and politically. Gather information for a graphic organizer in order to visually make a regional comparison pertaining to locations of humanitarian organizations, conflicts, governments, and any text used in the unit; A Long Walk to Water, Relief Organizations, Video Clips, poetry, text pairings, blogs, etc.

10.10 Students analyze instances of nation building in the contemporary world in at least two of the following regions or countries: the Middle East, Africa, Mexico and other parts of Latin America and China.
1. Understand the challenges in the regions, including geopolitical, cultural, military, and economic significance and the international relationships in which they are involved.
2. Describe the recent history of the regions, including political divisions and systems, key leaders, religious issues, natural features, resources, and population patterns.
3. Discuss important trends in the region and whether they appear to serve the cause of individual freedom and democracy.
