Hello! I am Dr. Leslye Tinson Whitehead. I have been teaching at SJSU since 2015, and I am also an SJSU alum. Go Spartans!
Originally from Compton, California, Dr. Whitehead (maiden name: Tinson) is a Senior Lecturer of Psychology and African American Studies at SJSU and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She earned her doctorate in Educational Leadership from SJSU, and both her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology and Master of Science in Clinical Psychology from San Francisco State University.
Prior to joining SJSU, Dr. Whitehead taught undergraduate courses at San Francisco State University, City College of San Francisco, College of San Mateo, Diablo Valley College, and Evergreen Valley College. She has also worked as a mental health clinician for the Foster Care Mental Health program in San Francisco, Counseling and Psychology Services at CSU East Bay, and San Benito County Behavioral Health Department.
In 2015, Leslye Tinson was appointed by former California Governor Jerry Brown to serve as a Public Member of the California Private Security Disciplinary Review Committee, North. In 2019, Governor Gavin Newsom reappointed Leslye to this committee. She served until December 2021, when she relocated to Nevada.
Professor Tinson continues to serve SJSU students as an online instructor. She is a Life Member of the National Council for Black Studies, a clinical member of the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and a 20-year active member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
I am a wife, sister (#4 of 5 siblings), a daughter, a bonus-mom, and a loyal friend. In my spare time, I enjoy hanging out with my dog, reading, and swimming! I am addicted to Grey's Anatomy, Love & Hip Hop, and all things Serena Williams, Beyonce, & Mary J. Blige.
I got married in March 2024, so my new name is Leslye Whitehead.
I approach teaching with a great deal of enthusiasm, a commitment to social justice and equity, and my goal is to ensure you have a successful learning experience. At times, you may consider my style to be non-traditional, as I am flexible with making sure each student has what they need.
I enjoy working with students and helping them grow, by encouraging them to bring their lived experiences into the classroom. I think the best learning happens when you can apply what you are learning in class to examples in the "real-world." Feel free to engage with me inside and outside of the classroom!
