Blended learning has allowed us to differentiate our instruction to better reach each student. With the use of student centered learning strategies and a variety of learning modalities, students to take ownership of his/her learning. The use of technology has allowed students to research and become better global citizens. Both independent and collaborative project based learning allows students to become invested in his/her learning and to apply the knowledge gained into real world applications. Cross curricular learning and Social Emotional learning leads to a well rounded individual.
In STEM class students complete projects throughout the year demonstrating their knowledge of different technology.
In MATH class students worked on and completed a project on buying a car, using technology to research and Math concepts learned, like percentages, price comparison etc.
In middle school ELA, Station Rotations aren't done in the traditional sense. Rather than moving in the rotations at a set pace, students are given a weekly agenda with the tasks that need to be accomplished for the week. Students are given freedom in choosing what tasks to work on each class period. While students are working independently on the different tasks, this affords the teacher time to meet in small groups, have individual student conferences, or help students as needed.
In ELA, at the end of a novel study, students are given project options to show their learning. Students are offered a variety of projects so they can choose the project that best fits their learning style.
In MATH students were given an option to choice means to show their learning of integers.
Students were given a questionnaire and a learning style inventory to complete. Through this, students were able to reflect on who they are as students and share their challenges, as well as their strengths. Through this data, teachers were able to gain relevant information about each student so we can help all students be successful.
In response to knowledge gained through the learning style inventory and student survey, students are given different options to show their learning. For example. When reading a novel, students are given the option to do close reading notes or sketch notes (for the more visual learners) . In Math students show understanding through diagrams, sketches or even oral explanations.
Students participate in team-building activites that help cultivate an environment where students learn to work together and communicate effectively.
In Art, artists are given a checklist to work at their own pace to accomplish the assignments. This allows the teacher to work one-on-one with individual or small-group artists.
