Resources to practice addition and subtraction facts

We will start Module 2 -Introduction to Place Value using Addition and Subtraction up to the Number 20. In this module we will extend our work with addition and subtraction to the numbers 1–20, and learn some new strategies along the way.

Key Common Core Standards:

•Represent and solve problems using addition and subtraction

Understand and apply properties of operations and the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g. 3 + 2 = 2 + 3, and 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10)

Add and subtract within 20

Understand place value

English Language Arts

We will work on Unit 3 of the Superkids Curriculum.

We will continue to associate ng with /ng/ and le with /el/. Decode words with ng and le. and we will lean to identify rhyming words

Memory Words do, have, show, how, me, a.

During the following weeks, students will learn to Categorize words and will generate questions to distinguish between reality and fantasy. They will recognize plot, problem and solution, sequence of events, as well as recognize patterns in text ..

SCIENCE

We will start the module "Sound and Light". Students will develop an understanding of how to observe and manipulate the phenomena of sound and light. They will explore these dimensions of the natural world using simple tools and musical instruments. The driving question for the module is, "How do sound and light interact with objects?"

During the following weeks, students will learn that sound comes from vibrating objects. They will explore how to change sound volume and pitch and develop simple models for how sound travels from a source to a receive

Religion

  • We learned about what we celebrate on the Feast of the Epiphany.

  • We will finish Chapter 5 this week. We learned about Mary, the Mother of God. Her love in and about love for God.

  • We will start Chapter 7. The Holy Spirit, Our Helper. Students will learn that the Holy Spirit is our helper and Guide. Students will explore that the Holy Spirit is our special teacher.

Social Studies

Monuments and Specials symbols for ur Country.

They will also learn about the history of the First Thanksgiving

Last year - Grandparents/Special Person Day

MATH

Students have made significant progress towards fluency with addition of numbers to 10 (Standard 1.OA.6). Students will continue to be presented with opportunities intended to advance them from counting all to counting on, which leads many students then to decomposing and composing addends and total amounts.

During the next weeks, our math class will explore the meaning of subtraction as it relates to addition. Students will be taught to solve a subtraction problem efficiently by either counting on or counting back on the number path. For example, to solve 9 – 8 it may be more efficient to think 8 + ? = 9 and count on from 8 than it is to count back from 9.

You can expect to see homework that asks your child to do the following:

Read a math story, then break the total into parts. Write a number bond with addition and subtraction number sentences to match the story.

Use the number path to solve a subtraction number sentence. Identify the addition sentence that can help you.

Use the number path to complete the number bond, and write an addition and a subtraction sentence to match the number bond.

English Language Arts

We started the first unit of Adventures of the Superkids, Your child will begin a whole new adventure in reading and spelling. In the first levels of the Superkids program, your child had lots of practice spelling simple words in which one letter stands for each sound. Now in the third level, students will learn how to use patterns, rules, and memorization to spell more difficult words.

Each unit in this level ends with a 10-word spelling test that includes Pattern Words and Memory Words.Pattern Words are regular words that follow sound-spelling patterns or rules. On the spelling list for a unit, Pattern Words are grouped together by their similar spellings. For example, words that end in ish, such as dish and wish, are in a group and words that end in unch, such as lunch and punch, are in another group. Children spell the Pattern Words by writing the letters they know that stand for the sounds in the words, and the pattern helps them remember the spelling. If children can spell one word in a group, they can easily spell all the words that follow the same pattern.

Memory Words are irregular words that cannot be sounded out or have letter-sounds children have not been taught yet. For example, he, where, and only are all taught sounds children have not been taught yet.

The students learned that there is a pattern that can help them distinguish between words that end in -ch and -tch. A consonant comes before words ending in -ch and a vowel comes before words ending in -tch. Please have your child review the memory words (pronouns) and pattern words (could be any word with the -ch or -tch ending), that they received last week, for a Spelling

Science

We continue with our investigations for Air and Weather

Students have explore the natural world by using simple instruments and calendars to observe and monitor change. They use new tools and methods to build on their understanding of the weather and to find out about properties of air by exploring how objects interact with air. Students use syringes to investigate air. They will discover that air can be compressed and that air under pressure can push objects around.

Students will put together tubes, a bottle, water, a rubber stopper, and two syringes to create a system. They will add water and use air pressure to push the water around the system.

Students will continue to observe daily changes in air temperature and connect them to the daily movement of the Sun in the sky. They monitor changes in hours of daylight over the seasons and connect them to changing weather conditions. And they find the Moon in the day and night skies and monitor its movement over the month. Religion

We will start Chapter 3. God the Creator.

In this chapter the children learn about God the Creator. Use the creative reading of the Creation story from the Book of Genesis to help the children understand, respect and love God's creation.

Class updates

I enjoyed meeting with all of you during Parent teacher conference. I am doing all I can to help your children adjust to the "Fast" pace of First Grade and to for them to have a great experience during school.

In the beginning of October, the First Graders met with their buddies to read a book. It was really fun seeing them interacting.
