Shading 101

Step 1: Use 3 straight lines to determine the 3 planes. 

Step 2: Use larger brief strokes to determine the range of value in the 3 planes. 

Step 3: Shade the background to give it a sense of space. Be sensitive the grey values. 

Step 4: Clean up the shading with clearly defined edges and tones

Step 1: Draw a square with 4 quadrants. Draw the circle within the square.

Step 2: Determine where the light and dark values are with broader strokes. Keep the highlight (white areas) untouched. 

Step 3: Draw in the background to create space. 

Step 4: Add in the dark tones and clean up the edges and be sensitive to value contrast.
