Future goals
In addition to satisfying the requirements of the regular English 10 class as outlined in the class syllabus, Honors students will select from the following interest-based, curiosity-building, academically enriching tasks, which, listed below, constitute the Honors Contract.
Please note that:
Honors students not showing adequate progress in the regular coursework and/or the Honors Contract by midterms (Progress Reports) will be removed from the Honors program.
Honors students who do not fulfill their monthly meetings and communication obligations by midterm will be removed from the Honors program.
Honors students not completing their Honors Contract by the week prior to finals will have their grade lowered by ½ letter grade.
Read and select three projects from the categories below as your Honors Contract choices for English 10H this semester. The categories are Leadership, Reading & Writing, and Faith. You must select one from each category. Additionally, please read through the guidelines and inspiration for your end-of-year Passion Project. Once you have made your choices, please document them on your contract sheet, sign it, and return it to Ms. Vergara during class.
After completing each section, you must document your accomplishments and reflections on your online portfolio. These reflections should be substantive and meaningful, not a recitation of what you did or the steps you took but focusing on your learning. For example, if you say you “grew a lot,” explain what that means: In what ways? How so? How do you think or behave or act differently because of the project you completed? what was the hardest part of this project? why did you choose it? what did you learn from it? what would you have done differently? Give examples when possible.
Any changes in project selection must be sent to your teacher via email before the next meeting.
You will need photo evidence for these activities, so please document your work meetings and progress often.
Please discuss each selection with Ms. Vergara, she will be able to provide more details and guidelines!
Note: During your second semester, you must select projects that you did not complete in previous semesters unless the project is tutoring. If there is a project you have done before but want to repeat, please talk to Ms. Vergara for approval first.
1. TUTORING: Tutor a student (preferably an international student) taking English 10. The goal of these sessions are to help them understand and complete the assignments, not to do them for them. You must hold a minimum of three (3) sessions, at least once a week, in Ms. Vergara's classroom. For every tutoring session, keep a log where you record the date, a brief description of what you provided help with, and your reflections and observations for each session. This works best towards the second or third meeting, or around progress reports.

2. BOOK CLUB: Lead and participate in a book club for an independent reading book (fiction or nonfiction) you choose to read with 3-4 friends. The book club should meet at least three times, and you must submit a video of the book discussions or meet at a designated time in my classroom. Your book club should discuss specific important passages, thematic concepts, character growth (or lack), life lessons, etc., not only your opinion about the book. You must prepare at least 5 leading questions to encourage deep thinking and participation. You must then log your experience in your growth log.

3. PSA CAMPAIGN: You must identify an English-related area of the school environment that could be improved or something the student body would benefit from having. This need should be able to be approached or solved from an English class point of view. (i.e.: MLA and Academic Integrity guidelines posters or brochures, benefits of Creative Writing and forming a club, benefits of reading on mental health, Digital vs. Print Reading, supporting local libraries, or promoting diverse voices in literature. You must put together a Public Service Announcement (PSA) campaign to be placed around the school. This campaign must have a creative title, objective, and at least 3 different deliverables. Each of these must have a clear purpose and message.

The required deliverables for this campaign.
3. CLASSROOM LIBRARY ORGANIZATION: Your goal is to inventory and organize Room 205's library in a way that is easy to understand. If you are interested, please discuss this option with Ms. Vergara for further details and instructions.

A spreadsheet with an inventory of ALL books in Room 205's library.
An explanation of your process. How did you organize, label, and categorize the books you added to the library? what program did you use?
1. ALTERNATE ENDING: Write an alternate ending for a new book of choice; the novel may be class-assigned or from your independent reading. Write a brief introduction summarizing the main events of the novel and introducing the main characters, and share why you’re revamping the ending (5-7 sentences max). Finally, write a 700+ word creative writing alternate ending.

The alternate ending to the story you chose. Please make sure you include ALL required information
2. MOSAIC POETRY: Last year I saw a trend on TikTok that uses a version of the quote by Ranata Suzuki, “Your heart is a mosaic of everyone you have ever loved, even for a heartbeat” and the quote by Chuck Palahniuk, author of Fight Club: “Nothing of me is original. I am the combined effort of everyone I’ve ever known.” Your task is simple, write your version of a mosaic poem and recite it to the class (or record yourself reciting it). Please ask Ms. Vergara for the detailed instructions and rubric.

The audio/video of your poem
3. SHORT STORIES: You will read and annotate 4 different short stories from around the world (ask Ms. Vergara for the approved list). When annotating, pay close attention to the way the events of the story are narrated, the characterization and the way the main character thinks, speaks, and operates, any important quotes, your reactions or connections to the texts, any literary devices used, and the overall style of the author. You must turn in these annotated texts. Then, create a movie poster for your favorite story where you visually highlight the mood, setting, main characters, and plot. Please ask Ms. Vergara for detailed instructions about the content and style of a movie poster.

1. POPE FRANCIS' ENCYCLICALS: Read the three papal encyclicals by Pope Francis (Click the button under the image). You will read and annotate all three documents. Then, create a large infographic that visually presents the main themes of fraternity, environmental stewardship, and the role of faith as a guiding light in human life. The final product must reflect what you learned from these documents, and how they can be applied to our day-to-day life. Prepare to present your work with your teacher and the class.

2. PUPPET SHOW: You will put together a short play or puppet show for students in our school's little vineyard, where you explain to them one of the seven themes of Catholic Social Teaching. You will create a script, as well as the characters and puppets, and perform it for them at a time that is convenient for their teacher (note: if you are unable to make the schedule work, you must record it for them). The play or show must be between 5-8 minutes long. Please ask Ms. Vergara for further instructions and materials.
3. FAITH EXPLORATION: This is a great opportunity to get creative and design your own experience, especially for our non-Catholic friends, but an option for all. You must design your own faith-related exploration experience and activity (i.e.: Interfaith dialogue podcast, personal prayer and meditation log, spirituality in nature exploration, art as an Expression of Faith, etc.) that you work through for a few weeks. You must discuss your topic and plans with Ms. Vergara beforehand.

This option encourages the development of the whole student, a tenet of Saint Jeanne’s education. It is inspired by Genius Hour, though it is modified to fit our schedule.
You will choose a large/substantial project to work on all semester long. Devise a SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely) goal and then make a plan that you will work through over the course of the semester. The project should take you about 20 hours over the course of the semester (approximately one hour per week), and you will need to document those 20 hours in a log of some sort (chart, videos, blog, etc.). We will talk about your progress at each checkpoint during the semester and this will help you stay on track and not procrastinate. The final project should showcase something that you are passionate about, would like to improve upon, or a new skill or challenge you have always wanted to develop but haven't had the time to do so. For example:
I’ve always been interested in photography. So, I want to create a portfolio with sections for portraits, architecture, landscape, and zoom shots.
I love crafting and want to take it to the next level. So, I’m going to learn how to embroider two full landscapes.
I’m a musician and I’ve always wanted to write and record my own songs. So, I’m going to write 5 songs and record a demo CD of those five songs.
These are only suggestions, but this is an area for you to really search within yourself and think about what it is you want to investigate and spend substantial time working on. The SMART goals and the logs are the key to this one!
