San Jose Betsuin Japanese Language School

BACK TO SCHOOL start date: September 14, 2024

We hope to see old and new friends in SEPTEMBER 2024!

We are going to have our first opening day on Saturday, September 14, at 9:00 am.

We offer a free trial of our classes!  It's a great opportunity to try a new language for anyone.

Traditionally we kick off the school year with a Principal's message at the beautiful San Jose Betsuin Hondo across the street from our classrooms.

Welcome!

Our school was established in 1907 for young Nikkei individuals who were Japanese American, whose first language wasn't Japanese. Today we have students who want to learn Japanese or are interested in Japanese culture.  We welcome people from all backgrounds and from various age groups. Although we are affiliated with the Buddhist Temple, our focus is teaching Japanese,  so religion is not required.  However, you can also actively engage in Japanese-American culture and the community at the Buddhist temple in the historic San Jose Japantown, which is one of only three currently existing Japantowns in the entire nation.

Please see the schedule page for the school calendar and events for 2024-2025!

About Us

We are dedicated teachers and love to meet people who are interested in Japanese language and culture. Our principal is the minister of the Buddhist temple. Our student demographics, as well as our temple community, are diverse.
