Textbook: "Algebra" by Michael Artin, Second Edition, Prentice Hall

Course Content: The class focuses on groups and linear algebra, with matrix operations leading to many concrete examples of groups (rings, modules and fields will be the topic of Math 5320). We will cover material from Chapters 2-7 of the book, including the following list of topics.

Prerequisites: "C" or better in Math 3210 and (Math 3220 or Math 4400 or Math 4510). Familiarity with the basics on matrices and set theory will be assumed. To this end, it is advised to review Chapter 1 of the textbook and any introductory chapter on set theory (e.g., Chapter 1 of "Foundations of Analysis" by J. L. Taylor).

Coursework and Grading: There will be weekly homework assignments, two in-class midterms, and a comprehensive final exam. The homework will count for 30% of the grade, each of the midterm for 20%, and the final exam for 30%. The lowest two homework grades will be dropped.
