Chi Epsilon members are expected to uphold the four pillars of the Honor Society: Scholarship, Character, Practicality, and Sociability. Through community service, tutoring, and social events, members develop and hone the core virtues of Character and Sociability. Participation in these events is mandatory for pledging members of Chi Epsilon, as developing each of the four virtues is a fundamental aspect of Chi Epsilon membership and is essential for success in the civil engineering industry.
Students accepted into Chi Epsilon demonstrate high academic achievement. Chi Epsilon extends an invitation to only a select few students who meet specific academic criteria:
Chi Epsilon members must have an overall GPA of 3.0 or better.
Candidates must also be in the top third of their respective graduating class.
Finally, candidates must be taking or have completed CEE 270 and CEE 271 with two of the following 300-level civil engineering courses:
Chi Epsilon strongly believes in giving back to our community and holds utmost the quality of character in our members. Every semester, pledges and members participate in a community service project. Our service projects include engineering engagement days with middle and high school students, community clean-up days in the Mānoa and Mo'ili'ili areas, the Mokauea Island Restoration Project, and Storm Drain Stenciling for the City and County of Honolulu. Members and pledges are required to attend at least one community service event.
Chi Epsilon tutors effectively convey detailed and complex information in a way that can be easily comprehended by students being tutored. It requires the member to think critically and rely on their practicality.
Chi Epsilon tutors enable and encourage students to understand and appreciate concepts of engineering, math, science, and other related subjects. In addition, Chi Epsilon tutors promote self-esteem, confidence, and an appreciation of civil engineers among the students they work with.
Chi Epsilon has tutored for the following introductory level engineering courses:
Tutoring sessions are designed to help students prepare and review for midterms and quizzes, and are scheduled within a few days prior to such tests. Tutors may help individuals, study groups, or even provide a classroom-style lecture.
To build the virtue of Sociability, the chapter hosts at least one social event each semester. Past socials include beach potlucks, bowling, Dave & Busters nights, game & movie nights, hiking, karaoke, and tailgating. See our calendar for more information.
Chi Epsilon recognizes the importance of both professional and informal socials. To develop professional networking and social skills, our members attend a Pau Hana event with the XE Alumni Association and are required to attend at least one professional engineering organization's meeting. We also hosted a joint workshop with the UH Career Development and Student Employment Department to develop professional networking skills.
Chi Epsilon strongly pushes each of our members to improve on their practical skills by participating in professional development events. These include events such as resume workshops, mock interviews, and site visits with various civil engineering companies.
Chi Epsilon's professional development upholds the pillar of practicality, by allowing members to practice both their hard and soft professional skills. This will allow our members to further ready themselves for the working world once they become graduates. Members are required to attend at least one professional development event to stay active. See our calendar for upcoming events each semester!
