FLUID: non-rigid flow field decomposition and estimation

Post date: Dec 03, 2010 9:10:37 PM

This interdisciplinary project, that we have entitled FLUID, aims at studying and developing new computer vision based methods for the estimation, the analysis and the description of complex fluid flows from image sequences. It is a project of EU and conducted by European universities, organizations and companies, see FLUID for more details.

Non-rigid flow fields distribute widely in the natural environment, e.g. cloud movements, ocean circulation, tap-water flows etc. Such flow fields are hard to be modeled or parametrized. This gives rise to great challenges to the computer vision based approaches, which were developed during recent years and heavily depend on the direct regularization or smoothness of the displacement field. Such variational methods often oversmooth the displacement field and fail to recover accurate non-rigid flow patterns.
