Dam Repair Update 10/01/2013
Hooray, we did it! The Wildwood Lake Dam is repaired and certified operational by the state. Special appreciation to Steve Shifflett for heading this project and coordinating with the Engineering and Construction Contractors as well as State representatives. Water is collecting and we may have to make some minor adjustments with the drain once the lake levels out. It took the whole neighborhood to participate in paying their dues to make this a reality. The dam area is off limits to vehicle traffic and a gate will be installed to protect the emergency spillway per state regulations. You can access the dam area on foot or non-motorized vehicles. We poured a concrete boat launch ramp at the common area peninsula and we will be adding a stone drive to the ramp next year. Gas powered motors are not allowed in Wildwood Valley Lake but electric trolling motors are permissible.
Please be careful when walking around the common area as we removed a number of perimeter posts along Wildwood Drive and Deep Step. The holes for the posts are still there and obscured by the thick grass. The Board elected to conduct a self-help project to cut the heavy growth in the common area vice contracting one time this year. Thanks to those that participated as it was a big job but looks better now (Adam Snow, Steve Shifflett, Bruce Shifflett, David Huff, and Barry Barnett). Anonymous people also were seen weed-whacking in the common area this summer. Your help is appreciated too!
The WWVPOA Board has retained a contractor to commence work on repairing the WW Valley Lake dam as soon as weather permits. Our Engineer for the project as obtained all of the required permits and licenses to proceed with the work and once the dam repair is complete and certified by the State we will be able to collect the grant money we qualify for from the State.

I feel as a homeowner the information and/or estimates you have obtained thus far on the lake repair should be available for a inquiring homeowner to view. We will make the repair costs available to the POA when we have all the quotes and selected the best value proposal.
Please either email or mail a copy of the information you have for review. We will publish the cost of repair on our website.
What designs are your contractors and state officials recommending for this repair? The engineering firm we have retained has provided quotes for three options that we have considered and we are moving forward to obtain more construction quotes for the selected solution of a replacement sleeve in the current flow pipe.
Are we limiting ourselves to only standpipe designs? That is our selected design.
Is it true that if this repair would have been done sooner the state wouldn’t be involved? No, the State must be involved and inspect any work performed on a dam of this classification, regulations did change this year and have increased the regulatory oversight on dams in the state.
Does the state involvement increase the cost to do the repairs? No, we would still have had to file the same plans and have the Engineer create the same amount of paperwork, we are fortunate that VA has grant money for privately held dams this Spring that we have applied for and may qualify for that assistance.
